Harmonic Balancer Holder Tool

For pulling the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley on the Corolla, the shop manual says to take off the starter and wedge a large flat screwdriver into the flywheel teeth to hold the crank.

I don't like that idea, so I went looking for a tool to hold the pulley so I could pull the bolt.
My 1/2" impact wrench wouldn't do it.

Harbourfreight didn't have one, neither did Advance Auto Parts, nor Autozone.
NAPA had one for $78.00............... I thought....... mmmmmmm.........NO!

So I made one with $8.55 worth of material from Home Depot (1"X 1"X 4', 1/8" thick angle).

I cut off a 12" piece, then cut 4" of one flage off of that. Drilled some holes to take 10mm bolts, and Viola!!!

If you decide to do this I suggest you get grade "8" bolts

My impact gun shot the bolt right out. When I went to put the pulley back on, I simply used the rubber grip handle thing, used to take off oil filters, and held the crank in place while I tightened it.

Yeah, usually my 1/2" impact gun will break those bolts loose, but this one was quite reluctant to move. A 24" long 1/2" drive breaker bar did it.

you can also put it in gear and have someone step on the brakes.

Or crank your compressor up.... sometimes I need to get it up to about 130psi before it'll crack some loose.

depends on the impact gun, I have one that sucks so bad it won't take lug nuts off at 100 psi :| (no it isn't broken unfortunately, at least then I could actually have hope for it). A shop I worked at had one that if you weren't careful you could damage the rim it had that much power.

Automatic.

My compressor will only make 125psi.

If I am pulling the oil pan, I will use a piece of 2x4 to block the crank, but this time I was just doing the timing belt.
