Going ahead with AE95 4A-GE conversion.

A quick couple of questions first.

A. how long will this take? I have an engine to buy and people to help me.
B. Is it easier to replace the top end onto my 4AF or the whole engine - would love to use existing block?
C. What exactly will i need to do to accomodate this with the 4WD system?
D. Is this a worthy mod to the engine?

A. Depends on how complete the engine is that you are buying and if you get all the wiring with it. Mechanically swapping the engine isn't that much work. Can be done in a day.
(But if you have a 4A-F (carb) engine...then it will take more work, because you'll have to either carb the 4A-GE of install a fuel pump)

B. Again, depends on what type of 4A-GE you're buying...the later 4A-GE's have a 7-rib cylinderblock. earlier block's only have 3-ribs.
Both block's are stronger than you're 4A-F cylinderblock. Fysically...that head can be swapped...but I wouldn't do it.

C. If the 4WD gearbox fits to you're 4A-F cylinderblock, than it should also fit the 4A-GE (but I'm not 100% sure on that...not a very common swap)

D. What exactly do you mean? the 4WD system to the 4A-GE?
And it depends on you're expectations of this swap I guess

it will not fit, as the 4A-FE block have a groove for the transfer case to fit, the 4A-GE block don't have that groove

if you want a 4A-GE, it will be better to find a way to replace the internals and the head (dont remember which internal are compatible)

The cranks are different. (F) 6 bolt and (G) 8 bolt flywheel.
The piston crowns are different. Recessed for diifferent valve angles.
Some connecting rod ends are different depending on the year, I think some (older) are 38mm and others (newer) are 40mm.

I would plan to change the crank, flywheel, pistons and rods.

You will also need change the radiator, or do some plumbing modification (rerouting)

I think the difference in the blocks is more of a recess in the oil pan flange than a groove.

Baring any major hic-cup, I would say 2 - 6 weeks to have the car running again, unless you are going to be working on it full time.

It will work... BUT it's actually easier to do a head swap on the AE95s due to all the problems Donald just explained, I've seen this done before... 4AGE head with 4AFE bottom end on an AE95 sedan, as rare as an AE95 sedan is, one with a 4AGE was even rarer.

no... there's a different casting in the blocks.... the 4age block won't bolt to the trans because the diff gets in the way.... we had to even modify a 94 4afe to get it to fit on the AWD setup....

you can use the FE block itself or modify (will have to grind about 1/2" by 3" or so... don't know for sure as I wasn't there when he ground the block down) to be able to squeek the trans by the block.....

you'll need to do some custom wiring.... or find out how to mod the FE ecu.... but very few have gotten a 4age running right on a 4afe ecu....

Ive decided against the 4age swap and was wondering,

Would a 1.3l turbo from a starlet fit in fine into this car without having to modify much?

can get one of these engines cheaper then a 4age.

That would be even more difficult, since it is a 4E series engine. The enginemounts are different and the 4WD gearbox really doesn't line up with that engine. And that is to name only two of the problems you would encounter. There would be a lot more along the way
