So I'm having some issues with the VSS on my 20V swap.
originally the VSS is in the trans where the speedo cable goes... I like having a speedo, so I can't do it that way. So I researched it and there is a VSS in the stock gauge cluster. sweet right? not quite...
my SR5 doesn't have a connection to the ECU like a GT-S would, but does have a connection that goes to the cruise control computer plug. so I cut the wire (purple/white) out of the plug and ran it to my ECU (to L11, where SPD should be) and it still doesn't work... I still get the VSS check engine light.
does anyone know why it isn't working?

I'm a bit confused. So you no longer have the stock VSS wire from the trans because you changed the trans out with another?
I could be wrong but I thought the wire to the cruise computer tapped into the VSS wire at or around the ECU. If this is the case you're still not getting a VSS signal to the cruise ECU or engine ECU if the VSS wire to the trans is no longer hooked up.

the VSS wire that goes to both the cruise computer and the ECU comes from the speedometer on the gauge cluster. I didn't have the VSS wire going into my stock ECU because I have a 4AF which doesn't have it... but does have it going to the cruise control computer, so I took it from there.
Stock on an AE92 there is no VSS sensor on the transmission, just on the 20V. So I swapped out the transmission sensor for the speedometer cable.
after ruling out my gauge cluster and my wiring I swapped in an extra ECU my friend had lying around and that seems to have fixed the problem. I cracked open my ECU and it had a busted capacitor that looks like it fried some traces.

Cool, so just to clarify the AE92s use the speedo cable from the trans to spin the speedometer and a speed sensor in the instrument cluster?
No corollas over here have one. my friends AE92 trueno can go over 200kmh and my AE95 can get quite quick.
not necessarily.
It tells the ECU that the car is moving. Supposedly if you rev you car in neutral you'll have a lower rev limiter than if you're moving due to the ECU getting the signal from the VSS. I have yet to try this though.

VSS for the ECU is mainly used for emission control purposes.
