well i bought a ae101 short shifter and tried it on my ae92 sedan and from eyeballin it i would need a spacer that would fit the three bolt pivot bracket maybe bout 3/4 to 1 inch and i need to make my front hole a lil bigger where the linkage goes through the shift assemble area because mine i alil smaller than the one i seen in others but when i do do it i post it up

don't worry i've sorted it now got one from a 6th gen celica it's made alot of difference all i needed to do was take the plastic holding bracket off the ae92 stick and put it onto the celica shifter then bolted everything back together it's so much shorter now and shifting from 2nd 3rd is so much closer

hey
i followed a guide online and just went out to pick a part ripped out the stick, that was really hard and there was heaps of other stuff. got lots of cuts lol and the worst part was trying to get the plastic covering off over the gear assembly i thought it would break but surprisingly that stuff is really really flexible heres the link to the sort of walkthrough: http://forums.club4ag.com/zerothread?id=7067. this helped widen a few corners so to say, if you do think of doing this do do it it's a really fun thing to do and it cost me only like $15 NZD so thats 11 us dollars lol if you still want picks over the top of that link i would be more than happy oh and it says that it only works for the ae92 coupe but i have an ae92 sedan and it works fine.
and to your question 4drcorolla no first gear didn't hit my leg since i have a right hand drive car it was reverse lol
sorry bout the long post.

you don't need a spacer look at the photos in that link the only thing you need for it to work properly is the white plastic thing that is on the ae92 gear stick it is bloody hard to take off. the celica one won't work in the gear stick holder thats why you have to use the ae92 one. if you need any more info im more than happy to give you the information

um I wouldn't call that a short shifter

Basically you want to raise the pivot point and increase the length under the pivot point.... That would give you more travel output from the lower portion(under pivot ball) in comparison to the upper portion(above pivot ball).

So basically you would need a spacer if you wanted to greatly decrease the amount you physically need to move it and with a longer portion under the pivot point you would be actually moving the shift linkage farther with less motion of your hand.

That's what a real short shifter is.

well the one that i have put in is exactly the same as that and has reduced the throw and the side to side movement alot. I know because i put it in myself. you can find out by doing it yourself it came out of a i think gts celica so it would have to be short shift.

I agree to a point.

You can either raise the pivot point, or shorten the shaft above the pivot point.

I have made a short shifter for my Tercel by cutting 2" out of the shaft above the pivot point and having it welded back together. That shortened the hand movement quite a bit.

well thats only your opinion there but i have done the swap and u might just have to find out for yourself to actually know that it has shortened the throw and made the gears closer together but hey why should i be complaining bout it i have a short shift and u may not
