So pretty much extremely annoying day. I had to go about changing my fuel filter today. Not only do I have to work in the shop and do oil changes and shit on customers cars, but I'm trying to get this stupid fuel filter changed in my own car.
If anybody's ever done this, I'm sure you'll agree it's a bitch. Especially when the line going in the bottom is tighter then a virgin, and been in there forever. It was just one issue after another. If anybody ever does this, I recommend pulling the front left wheel off, and removing the vacume canister as they're both just a pain in the ass to work around and worth the extra time.
Also be very sure that you get new washers with your fuel filter for that top line going in, otherwise yours will leak all the way home like mine did because mine didnt come with the washers and apparently reusing the old ones doesn't work so well. Luckily after spending an extra half hour at work then going to shucks to get those little washers, I am beat. Still never did get that thing mounted correctly on the firewall again, but it's not going anywhere.
Sigh.. but at least my car starts up everytime much better! :-) The gas coming out of the old one was brown. If anybody wants more tips let me know, I'll tell you the sizes of what tools you need.
The two biggest pains on working on these cars are the fuel filter and removing/replacing differential fill plug and refilling it. On either one you have to work by feel as access is very limited.
Score one for the carbed guys -- on the 4AF, it's sitting right on the firewall with easy access. Takes a minute to change... it's the white plastic canister with red hoses coming out of it.
lol It was a bitch to do being my first time doing it on this car. But I guarentee I could do it again a lot faster now haha. That's how I am though. I take forever doing something the first time, but do it at least twice as fast the second time, like when I did my timing belt. :-p
Honestly the most annoying part was when I took the bottom line out, gas just kept coming out for some reason. Keys werent in the ignition, and I relieved the fuel pressure. My only guess is because the gas tank was more then half way full and the line is lower then the gas tank. So gas just kept leaking out of it when I was trying to change the damn thing, and gas got all over me when I put the line back in the bottom. If I even smell gas now it makes me feel sick. haha. Blehh, worst experience ever doing a fuel filter.
I work at a Ford Dealership so I do those fuel filters all the time, and they're all pretty easy for the most part. A few are just stupidly made though.

Did you loosen the gas cap to allow the pressure to escape? I forgot on mine and gas kept pouring out until i figured out that my gas tank was still pressurized! haha.

Yeah the first thing I did was loosen my gas cap to relieve pressure. But I think it was more of physics working against me at the time haha. Next time I'll need something to plug it! :-p If there is a next time lol.
best way to relieve pressure would be remove the fuel pump relay while the car is running, or if can use a vacuum pump on the fuel regulator to remove pressure.........
I think I need to do this to my '90. Is it possible to post a picture of where the filter is or explain to me where it is and what I need to do?? Thanks
If you open your hood, and you're looking at your engine, its on the firewall down on the right side. So technically it's driver side firewall. (behind the engine).
