Previous owner had taken it to Walmart for an oil change and they had forgot to put the drain plug back it. Owner ran it without oil for a while. The engine is not siezed according to the yard.
They're easy to work with, even if you need to swap motors. Even after, they're good on gas. If you're willing to put the work in and the amount of money they require to run, it's worth it.
I wouldn't believe the yard much, I don't think they would care if a car runs or not OR if they even tried. No oil and the customer drove it while it leaked, something is sure to be shredded.
First of all there is no possible way they forgot to put the drain plug back in. More like they double gasketed the filter or didnt tighten the plug enough. And why isn't walmart paying for a new engine if that's the case? Something just seems fishy here. First of all I definitely wouldn't trust that the motor isn't seized because if it ran with no oil long enough it will seize up, if not just mess a lot of things up inside. Something isn't right with that story.
But anyway, since they both probably need new motors, or to rebuilt them, I would probably go with which ever one has the best shape body and interior. Keep it as a side project and fix the engine, have a great car. $400 isn't bad. Plus, these cars are awesome. :-)
I'd go with the white GTS as it be easier to just put in a replacement motor... the red SR5 is an 89 so carbed 4AF, more trouble to do a 4AGE swap where as the other one already has one.
For the same price, I would say which ever has the better body and interior.
Plan on an engine change or rebuild either way.
Check for rust around the rear wheel arches and trunk seams.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
Got some more pictures of the white one and the condition of the interior. Interior wise the dash is cracked and is really dirty (red)but no rips in the seats.
The engine and the sunroof scares me.
Sunroof: I have no clue how to even go about fixing that
The engine looks a little scary:
No word back on the red one.
The 2 door Corolla's are hard to come by here in Utah.
Over the weekend I found the old sale receipt to my old 89 Corolla coupe from 97. The bloody thing only had a 103,xxx miles on it then.

Here's the red one - from the photo's the back deck needs to redone and the little trim piece around the bumper is missing. Looks like one of the seats is out as well.
Engine is alot cleaner:

The red GTS looks WAY WAY WAY sexier. That white one has cancer...
Sunroof rust is more than too common on AE92's. Like I said before in past threads, I have yet to come by an AE92 that has a sunroof where it is not rusted. Toyota may have halfed-ass the work, but then I don't think rust-proofing was as big as it is now where all new car chassis are chemically treated specifically for rust-proofing.
Think I'm going to pass on it for now but it's tempting.
It would just be sitting around for a few months until it got warm enough to work on (got to love living in an apartment), plus I still need to get my 4runner paid off.

That's probably the best bet. I get myself in the same boat all the time... I barely talked myself out of buying an '80 Toyota 4x4 without an engine yesterday.
The good news is that these cars won't be getting any more expensive any time soon. You've got years of good deals ahead of you.
Man I wish I knew why people treated their cars so horribly. That white one looked like shit. How did the engine get so massively covered in dirt? I always just wonder the stories behind half the shit that happens to cars. I think if you can't even take care of your car the simplest ways, you shouldn't even have one.
the bad news is that parts are getting scarce... pick up both of them and part out the white one to get the red one on the road.
I may just go ahead and go up and see tomorrow. No harm.

It's been in the salvage yard for awhile.
**EDiT** just talked to kid who is selling it. Has 189,xxx miles on it. Apparently, it smokes (mentioned in the ad) pretty bad until it is warmed up. Would that be due to a valve or head gasket issue and how difficult would that be too fix, cost wise? Would it be worth it to fix?
Also, the previous owner decided not to replace the sunroof glass after it cracked and just filled it back it. What ever that mentions.
The kid kind of sounded a little dopey over the phone. Could probable pick it up for cheaper than 400, if that is the case **end edit**
