AE92 Bad gas mileage n no heat low.

Hello, I just bought my first ae92, Im new to this world. I'v Had many supras, a celica, and other makes. It a wagon 5spd. My first tank off E took about 9gal. This morn I put 10.5 gal in {filled to the brim} and I only got 230 miles. Thats about 21mpg Not bad If I was driving my supra in the city. The person I got It from said the timing belt snaped and he replaced it along with the water pump. And I can see a new water pump the spark plugs are new too, the air filter is a lil dusty but ok. Its like the Car dosent want to rev right off idle but I drive 400hp+ cars every day so i dont know if its just me. I looked at the distrubiter and it was avanced far. so I backed it off and that made things worse, so i maxed it out and that made things better. {Ill use my t light tomm at work} I know its alot to take in but any ideas? Also the car never really fully warms up. As in if I let it sit runing then it will hit the mid mark and then when I drive the gauge gos down to cold and never gos back up and my heat temp drops. Help.

sounds like the timing belt could be out of time, did a mechanic do it or just a handy man??Heatin problem could be a stuck open thermostat, hope this helps

The timing belt was installed incorrectly - the car is off time. Advancing the timing "all of the way", in order to get the engine to run normally, indicates that the belt was installed so that the timing was severely retarded. That is, whoever did the job allowed the crankshaft and cam pulley to get out of sync with each other. This is easily fixed, by simply removing and re-installing the timing belt correctly.....then re-adjusting the distributor. In the mean time, I would NOT drive the car, as damage may result. It is possible that you could get away with the engine like this for awhile....but I would NOT recommend it.

As for the heat problem....I'm not sure. It could well be a stuck thermostat. However, the timing issue could have alot to do with it. Advancing the timing creates heat.....retarded timing results in reduced combustion temps. If your engine, even with the distributor adjusted as it is now, is still running with the timing rather retarded, then it would tend to not warm up to full operating temperature. As well, it would tend to foul the plugs, which would make things worse. In a cold climate, this could certainly cause the issue you describe.

As I said, don't drive the car like this - get it looked after, ASAP.

well crap Iv done 200+ miles already and god knows how many miles the other guy did. When I first got the car my friend redlined it. crap well. I was told that the motor is a non interference motor, what all do you think might be damaged?

It is a non-interference motor, nothing will be damaged from a snapped timing belt. I had that happen to me. More than likely, the timing belt may have been correctly installed but off by a couple notches.

True, the engine is non-interference. I didn't mean to suggest that the engine would self-destruct if driven with the timing badly out of spec (which it is)... no. However, it won't do the engine any good - and should be fixed. There certainly could be unforseen problems.....plugs fouling, overheating and cylinder head damage (IF the timing is now running too far advanced), etc. Unfortunately, since the engine was timed badly when the belt was changed..... and you've had to "jury rig" it to get it to run reasonably well.....you really don't know WHAT the actual timing might be. A timing light WON'T give an accurate reading, because the timing was screwed to begin with - it will only reflect what you've done with the distributor. So, again, I suggest getting it fixed. If you don't SEE the need for this yourself..... then don't say you weren't warned.

It's not too bad doing the timing belt on these cars, I'd just do what they said and check that out first, make sure all the timing marks line up correctly and according to factory specs. Should be good then.

It is painfully obvious you need to replace the thermostat. Get a new one from the Toyota dealer and you might as well pick up the o-ring (gasket) while you are at it. This will greatly help your gas mileage.

I bought the car this way. So today at work I worked on the car....Needless to say Im a bit pissed bec the guy Lied and said he replaced the water pump {not done} said he replaced the roller brg and what not. {not done} said he replaced all the belts. {all but the alt} that's the most important one. f a/c and power steering.
I think the car runs a lot better now. I backed down the timing to about 11-12 deg. Yea I know 10 is stock but I Have something I want to try. I didn't not get a chance to look at the t sat but I ordered one but they didn't have the O ring in stock so that was last on my list. It idles high now as in 1300-1500 rpm now but settles down when it warms up. well when I'm siting. I hope that hurt kill too much mpg before I get the O ring. Thank you all for your help, I will keep you posted.

I have the same exact issue with the heating. I've owned my car for 3 years and it has always warmed up to the middle after idling for 20 min but if I start driving it drops back down to cold and the heat gets cold, I should have my theromo checked too. I've never seemed to get more than 230 miles out of a full tank, I did notice however I get better milage driving city rather than hwy. Hwy im usually driving 75-80 mph and city 40-50 mph. if I mix that together I usually end up getting 190 miles out the tank instead.
