92 Corolla wont get out of 1st gear

I just finished changing the driverside axle on my buddies 92 corolla 1.6L with an Auto Transmission. and when i went for a test drive to make sure everything was good the car never left 1st gear. it goes into park and reverse just fine and i checked the transmission fluid and it was good. i am at a loss of why it could be happening. also there is a broken vacuum line that goes from the top of the throttle body to a sensor of some sort on the head. (hose maybe a footlong) I dont know if that has something to do w/ it.

thanks,
Joseph

edit: the broken sensor is the bvsv (bimetal vacuum switching valve)

I have never messed with the Corolla transmissions, but my Camry did the same thing. ....... Not good.....

Try draining the transmission, and refill with a mixtyure of Lucas transmission conditioner and transmission fluid. Measure and mix them before you pour it in, or it will take you half-an-hour to get the Lucas into that small fill tube.
If that doesn't work, it is probably loosing pressure in one of the accumulators or clutch pistons, because of a broken "O" ring.

Rebuilding these transmissions is not hard if you have the Toyota workshop manual, are carefull and lay your parts out in order. There aren't any special tools required, that you can't work around.

A rebuild kit cost about $300.00 for the Camry, 4 years ago.
I don't know what the one for the Corolla costs, but I doubt it will be much less.

Compare the price of a rebuild kit to the price of a salvage yard transmission and see which way would be better.
