Ok so I'm totally confusing my self right now, I thought I had this all figured out but maybe I'm forgetting something.
So last time I filled up it took 11 gallons. Then I drove until almost empty and filled up again, this time it took 11.7 gallons.
The distance I drove between fill ups was 278 miles.
I'm trying to figure out my gas mileage, if you do 278/11.7 you get 23.76 mpg. But that doesnt seem right at all. I feel like I'm not doing this right haha. Anybody wanna help me figure this out? I hate math sometimes.
MPG depends on your driving, engine conditions (timing, maintenances, etc), weather, city or highway driving, many more.
My MPG fluctuates greatly, too. I feel damn good to see 30mpg, but I get the occasional low 20's too. Sometimes I speed, sometimes I don't. Sometime I coast down, sometimes I ride the gear down. Sometimes I have my car running idle to warm up for lengthy periods...
BTW, good to know I'm not the only one keeping track of my MPG. I hit the tripmeter everytime I fill up, get the pump receipt and record the mileage. I have stacks of receipts in my car. I'll probably make a graph haha
That just doesn't seem right though. 23 mpg is horrible. That was a big mixture of freeway and city driving. Although I don't drive like an old asian lady either (no offense to old asian ladies on this forum :p)
I think the manual says about the same. Not near my ae92's dealer sticker, I think 26/32 mpg.
Comparing the AE92 to new cars, the AE92 still kick ass in MPG given the fact that the car is 20+ years but get just as good MPG as any new cars except hybrids. But then, those hybrid utilize huge, lithium batteries. Sad to be the owner of one who will have to get those batteries replaced; They don't last forever, like a cell phone lithium battery that don't last for crap unless you don't use it. $$$$$$$$$$$$
the 4afs and 4afes seem to get a lot better gas mileage.
I used to be able to get 40mpg out of my 4af if I drove it right.but averaged around 32-45. When I put my wheels and wider tires on it dropped to about 28 mpg...
so far on my 4AGE 20V I've been getting about 24ish I think. I've only gone through a few tanks though, this most recent tank seems promising :-P
I also drive the crap out of it though... and it barely sees any highway (except on the way to autocrosses which kind of cancels the highway out...)

A few factors that people forget sometimes are, tire pressures, tire width, and the amount of weight you carry around in the car. That plus the amount of time you spend idling in traffic, your driving style, and how much hill climbing you need to do. All this adds up and will affect your milage.
It is very difficult to calculate an accurate milage rate with 1 or 2 tanks of gas. Average it out over about 4 or more tank fulls, to get a more accurate figure. You might fill to a different level if you fill up at a different pump if there is any slope or grade. Although they all usually look as if they are level, they may not be.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
The 4A-GE is more power, has shorter gearing and burns through more gas than the 4A-F and 4A-FE, plus 4A-GE owners drive aggressively and also install gas eating wide wheels and tires.
My 4A-F Station Wagon gets 33-34 MPG at 65-70 MPH, but I use the factory original narrow wheels and narrow P155/80R/13 tires. i'm older so my "inner ricer" urges are long gone.
P155/80R/13... wow. haha. Thats a skinny ass tire. 13 at that. That's like a Geo Metro tire. But yeah, I think my gas mileage went down after changing from my 185/60/14's to my 205/50/15, the rims were an inch wider and it totally made a difference though. I noticed a lot more bumps and dips in the road, like it jerks me sometimes if the road isnt totally straight. Pretty annoying.
I thought I'd share the site I use to track my mileage, as a few users mentioned keeping stacks of receipts, or wanting to graph their miles: http://www.fuelly.com
My '92 Corolla's (209k on the clock) average mileage, and I've been tracking it about 8 months, is around 30.7/MPG.
Best mileage I ever got was all highway, 38.5/MPG. Worst was 25.9/MPG. Here's my car's page as well: http://www.fuelly.com/driver/aphexjb/corolla
