Compatible radios/cassette players from other year Corollas or Camrys?

I'm working on a few electrical mods on my Corolla that require rewiring some of the under-the-dash wiring. In doing this mod, I realize that if I could replace the double din radio and tape cassette player with a single din unit, it would make the result better: it would free up a dashboard bay that I could use for my project, instead of mounting a box under the dash. I don't know why Toyota has a separate radio and tape cassette mechanism for my model, when other models have a single din units that occupies just one dashboard electrical bay.

I have an 1988 Corolla. What other model years also work with this year? I assume all from 88-89 and maybe 90-92? What about newer generations of Corollas? or other Toyota cars, like the Camry?

I also realize that with the right wiring connectors and adapters, I could overcome the difference in the connections between different radio, CD, and tape/cassette models.

I also looked at newer radios from places like Crutchfield, some CD units have USB inputs and play WMA and MP3, and have input jacks for iPods and other MP3 players. I'll consider these, but they are perhaps a bit too fancy for my needs; unless I get a detachable faceplate, I risk getting it stolen, moreso since I take my car to Mexico occasionally for non-profit work.

Thanks.

You can find outdated aftermarket radios instead of the newer fancier ones. Outlet stores...

I put a Camry single-din radio/tape deck in mine. I don't know what year Camry it came from; it was in the back seat of my Celica when I bought it. Same wiring harness so it plugged right in.

I added a single-DIN pocket under the deck when I did so.
