My interior is going from the factory toyota burgundy red to black (black plastics, black floor, black dash, black door, black suedes). Here's what I've done so far:
It used to be burgundy. I've painted some of the other interior plastics as well, just haven't taken pics yet.
I got my black vinyl today to cover some stuff with it. I'll take pics and post them here as well.
Here's what I've been working on for the past few hours.
I currently have red LEDs in the instrument cluster. All the white on the OEM face glow red but the red lines on the face are red as well. So, at night, I don't know where the red lines start (like I really need to). To solve that problem, custom face. I couldn't find anything already made, for sale, that I like (the white face blue-glo illuminescent face are nice, but doesn't work with my plan). You can see the trial & errors. Still not done, got the speedo, fuel and temp gauge. Then have to make a backing to keep the light from shining through the black, also to make the things more rigid.
I'll post more as I go along. Maybe write up DIYs on anything I'm doing.
Still working on the gauge faces. But with interior work, here's what I got so far on the door panels. They will be black sueded, haven't found the right quality yet. But the top part of one is done with a wrap, waiting for a good day (we're snowed in, I'm in DC with 20"+ inch of snow) to do the other three.
More to come.
Hopefully I get this bid on a 4AGE silvertop. I just paid for GTS sideskirts (thanks, stancati)
That's sweet. Were you making your own gauge faces or something?
I actually painted my interior as well, it turned out pretty nice. I used Krylon - For Plastics, works real well on the plastic interior. Then I used Dupli-Color vinyl and fabric spray for the pieces that were more vinyl like. Like the door pannel handle, inside. It turned out pretty good, so far the paint is holding up pretty well. I'll show you a picture.
Yea, custom faces. I can't find ones I like so I'm taking the time to create my own. I have red LEDs in the cluster now, but the ones I'm making, I can go back to white and still have red accent
I really do want to stay away from spray on colors. I used Plasti-Dip black on the vinyl pieces like in the very first pic. I'll hate it when anything starts peeling. Plasti-Dip is more flexible, I aslo used Meguiars Qwik Detail on it to slick it up so it doesn't have the rubbery friction to it.
The last pic, I wrapped the upper door panel piece with a black vinyl wrap. For sure that's not going to peel.
Yeah the red was Dupli-Color - Vinyl Fabric spray, almost $6 a can. Good shit though, works really well on Dashes. I painted my old 92 Celica dash with that stuff, looked really nice. Just always make sure everything you paint you wipe down with an alcohol based fluid, like rubbing alcohol is what I used. Gets the surface nice and clean, and gets any Armoral type stuff off pretty well so the paint can stick real nice and not peel.
What type of bulbs does the instrument cluster take? And whered you get them? I need to replace a few and thought about doing the same thing as well, red LEDs. Does it look nice at night?
The main illuminating bulbs on the clusters use wedge-type bulbs, I believe the usual bulb number is 194. But I buy them from eBay, LED bulbs. Ebay> Wedge Bulb > look through results I'm not sure about coupe instrument clusters, they likely use the same bulbs, don't see why not.
For the gauges, special computer app my friend gave me back in 2005 during high school. Scan the old face, drew over it, pre-print on regular paper to see if everything is correct size and all, final print on Inkjet Transparencies (that ain't cheap!). It's not done yet, but I can provide a full DIY thread for it and whatever else.
I'm going with an all black interior, with possibly red stitching in some areas. The seats will be black with red centers.
As for exterior vinyls, not really interested much for stickers. The only thing I thought about was a big silver vinyl car top to "appreciate" the silvertop that I'm planning on getting. Other than that, no thoughts have been made. I may do a subtle airbrush graphic on the sides, if that becomes a vinyl graphic it'll have to be printed on clear vinyl.... shades of reds.
Ohhh ok SCT. 194 bulbs, those are super common for a lot of different applications, one being most common, license plate bulbs. That's dope, will make it easy to replace then.
And that's pretty tight about the faces. I bet I could do the same thing if I put some time into it. I just need a good scanner! :-p But did they turn out real good, fitment, looks, and illumination wise?
The gauge isn't finish yet. I haven't done a mock up for the speedometer face, the fuel gauge and temp gauge. Weather in MD has been blizzardry, 40+ inch of snow! Also waiting for a lexan sheet to come in, the transparencies I'm using are too floppy by itself.
The speedometer face took me up to some 2 hours even though it looks simplistic.
