how do I get the engine codes on my 91 Corolla with the 1.6 engine
Looking to get the engine codes from my 91 corolla can I cycle the key a certain way?? I ask because the gas millage is down and the car shutteres at stop signs sometimes, also the occasional hunting idle..Thanks TN
under the hood, look for a small black port, I cant remember exatly where its at on the ae92, but it'll say Diagnostic on it. then take a small piece of wire or a paper clip and jump the ports TE1 and E1. When you turn the key the check engine light will flash the code.
It will flash a certain amount of times (say like 3) short pause then flash again (say 5 this time) then long pause (this would be code 35). Now if you have several codes then the next code will flash after the long pasue; if only one code is present, it will repeat the code again.
It is just inboard of the left strut tower in the engine compartment.

Fantastic info! Had no idea that you could get away with using a paper clip, lol. Just went outside and tested my AE100 and the check engine light just kept flashing continuously with no pauses in between, which apparently means there are no faults. What a relief. Cheers for the info .

I got the same thing but I feel you are misguided KIWI by the fast single flashes others will chime in because it was my first time checking codes in my corolla...After getting the fast single flashes and messin around I stepped on the brake and shifted out of park to drive and got the actual code of 51... Have others had to do this to obtain trouble codes?? Can I test the TPS or VSV for A/C control?? ANY OTHER SUGESTIONGS ARE GREATLY APPRECIEATED..This may or may not be a symptom but latley on cold starts the car screams from the belts could my AC pump be locking up?

The A/C uses an electromagnetic clutch type pulley. When the A/C is not engaged, the pulley can rotate freely without actually operating the A/C pump.
So if the belt is slipping with the AC on, it may be locked up.

It is the A/C belt screaming, If I use the A/C it screams preaty consistant with the A/C off it churps on accleration. The belt feels preaty tight not excessively loose. The face of the A/C pump never turns no matter if A/C is on or off, with the engine off I can spin that outer face of the A/C pump freely..

Sounds like your A/C compressor clutch is shot.
The clutch is what engages the pully on the compressor shaft. It can be replaced without replacing the compressor.

No, it won't throw a code. These older ECUs don't read all that stuff.
Just take the belt off, and you will be good to go.
