engine stumbles when shifting into gears.

92 5sp wagon 4af.started noticing the engine wants to choke down when i'm letting the clutch out to shift gears.Wants to stall. Idles is a little rough now too. Timing? MAP sensor?kind of lost,can you offer any suggestions?Thank you.

4AF have no sensor whatsoever...

Check your timing first.

sorry its a 92 4 a fe 5spd wagon.great car,just is frustrating me! i get the idle and timing real close without a timing light,and the next day its back to sputtering.replaced m a p sensor.gonna try to clean the iac and check the cold start and fuel filter now.thank you

Is it throwing any trouble codes? You might want to get it properly timed with a timing light. Are you jumpering the right pins on the diag connector when you set the timing? If not you are only fighting the computer as it tries to dial the timing in.

Did you bridge your diagnostic port before setting your timing?

If not you aren't setting your timing and you are screwing with your ECU as it is trying to electronically correct for your mechanical timing.

I did the jumper wires and put in timing.goes good for a little while,then starts hesitating and stumbling again! Jumper in:runs fine,jumper out:stumbles. Any ideas?
