Is my son's transmission bad?

He's driving a '90 prizm and hasn't been maintaining it as it should be. Yesterday he came home and said, "I can't get my car to go in reverse." A neighbor who does mechanic work on the side took a look at the fluid level and sent him to Autozone to buy a quart of anti-slip fluid, and a couple of quarts of trans fluid to put in it, which he did. This morning when he woke up it went into reverse, but he came back later in the day and said the problem was back.

I went out and did a little shifting back and forth and what it's doing is when you put it in reverse, it delays for a few seconds, like it doesn't want to move, then moves slowly backward, much slower than it should be, like something is slipping inside the trans. Anyway, it's an old car and I don't want to be putting a ton of money into it. So what do you think is the problem and how much will it cost to repair?

The hydraulic valve body/ regulator could be on the way out the window, but it can be other things. Simplest would be gear shift cable out of adjustment.

It's typical cheaper to replace the transmission than to have it rebuild. But I think the usual cost of either is roughly $500, that's about what my parents paid more than 15 years ago when the reverse went dead in ours. That could be a lot higher now.

i think it could be an internal hydraulic leak that wont allow whichever holding member(s) to apply enough pressure

i would recommend getting a professional to diagnose it, auto trans hydraulic circuits can be pretty complicated and to actually check where the leak/problem is you need to test with air

I don't think it would be CHEAP per say for an overhaul or replacing of the transmission if it comes to that though.

I will try to find some information on your trans in the next couple of days, maybe i can be a little more specific if i knew the workings of a prizm auto trans a little better lol

Thanks. I was thinking it might be a clogged transmission filter as I don't know if that has ever been replaced.

I know this doesnt help your situation, but... you should of got a manual :-) So much more reliable.

But yeah, in this sistuation I'd take it to the Toyota dealership being it has a 1.6 4AFE Toyota engine, and have them diagnose the tranny. Then at least you'll know what your problem is and how much exactly to get it fixed. But before you go throwing $500-$1000 at fixing it, I'd think about having that mechanic friend of yours maybe fix it if possible, as long as he knows what hes doing, would be a lot cheaper.

We had a manual once...I think once it became my son's car instead of mine, it kind of got lost. Anyway, does the tranny from the same year of Corolla fit in the Prizm? I'm thinking it does, but how would I know? In case I wanted to hunt down a used one in good shape.

I think same year prizms that uses 4AF/4AFE/4AGE motors can very well use the same trans as long as the donor corolla uses a 4AF/4AFE/4AGE motor. After all, Prizms are American rebadged corollas.

'88 - '92 should be a direct install.
If you have O/D, get one with O/D. If you don't have O/D, get one without.

So, the 5 speeds will fit right in, as long as the linkage is replaced along with the tranny?

ROFL! I don't know what I was thinking. Some kind of five-speed auto, I guess! I have seen overdrive on automatics before, but I don't know if I've ever seen a 5-speed.
