Craziest thing:SR5 starting problem

Okay so my 1991 Corolla SR5 automatic with the 1.6 engine started having a "starting" problem about half a year ago.

It had the symptoms of a starter going out, it would not start but if I disconnected the pos. battery lead and connected it back again it would start. I guess the same as banging on a bad starter?

It would happen once in a while then progressed, I know I should have done something a while ago, but I'm partly employed right now. Then it got to the point where disconnecting the battery just a few times did not do it. I broke down and got under the hood, seriously. My Chilton manual was a waste of money it does not show me a good photo or image of how to get to the starter!

So I first checked the three main fuses, the 100,40 and 30 amp fuses directly in line to the battery. I broke one so I replaced them all, visually they looked very good, no corrosion.

In preperation of getting under the car and turning rusty screws/bolts gear and starter I sprayed WD40 on EVERYTHING under the hood including starter and leads and any wiring connections. I let it sit a short while, not yet removing anything.

Next thing you know, after two usual bad starts where I had to do the battery pos. lead disconnect then connect, I have had no problems. The damn car has been starting on first crank! It's like its old self now!! It has been two weeks now, no problems at all. What just happened??

Any ideas?

probably bad grounds or bad contacts somewhere... tighten them as tight as you can and clean the contacts with a wire cleaner.

I had cleaned the battery posts long before this happened and had pulled and inspected every fuse no matter the system it was in and all checked good and no corrosion. Thanks for the input though.

...when a contact inside the starter is not contacting like it should... a dead spot, worn spot, whatever, in one spot in the starter.

Corrosion within the starter itself can be the problem. WD40 does kill rust a bit...
