transmission and diff fluid types?

i just got my transmission and diff rebuilt a couple of days ago and the mechanic included everything even filter but not fluids. it was a bench job just to let you guys know. Well he told me that the diff uses the same type of fluid as the transmission and i was curious to see what you guys had to say because it sounds a little weird?

Automatics require ATF fluid for the hydraulics that works it, unlike a manual where it's only a bunch of gears. According from the factory service manual.....

Automatics: ATF Dexron II
Fill the transmission through transmission dipstick tube, drain on bottom of transmission on the transmission fluid pan.

The differential takes 75W-40 Gear Oil. The fill plug will be in the center of the cover. The cover itself is facing towards te firewall behind the transmission. The drain plug is on the bottom, below that cover.

Manuals: SAE 75W-90 Gear Oil (API GL4 or GL5)
Because this is not an automatic, it only takes gear oil.

Automatics take two fluids....

... do you have an Automatic?

If you do, the automatic trans has two separate sections inside: the automatic trans itself that requires ATF Dexron II fluid for the hydraulic, automatic workings of the gears.... And where your CV shafts goes in, the second section called the differential, takes 75W-50 Gear Oil.

Corrected... I got it mixed up...

The diff does take ATF as well, whoops. But you have to fill them both separate. I had mine dried up but ran fine, until the diff killed itself.
