1989 Toyota Corolla Fuel Pump line routing?

This is a mechanical fuel pump for a 1989 Toyota Corolla. Does anyone know where the inlet fuel line from the fuel filter goes to, (A) or (B) fitting? I know one is the inlet and the other is the return line, just not sure which is which. Thanks for your support.

According to FSM...

A) Return Fuel

B) Fuel Inlet

Yes, that is the way I had it hooked at first, however, the fuel filter was not filling up with fuel. So, I switched it to (A) for the inlet and (B) for the return, now the fuel filter fills up with gas. The engine is still not running right with the switch, however, it runs much better than the orginal hook up which was causing the engine to back fire due to not getting enough gas delivered to the carb. I'm thinking the fuel pump might be bad, not sure? Any additional comments are welcomed. Thank you.

Which ever the fuel line routing works. FSM even have mispellings and what not, so any other errors I won't be surprised. I don't have my car with me, either 30 minutes away, needed to borrow a truck to haul possibly my 4age.

Back fires? It could be more than the fuel pump. Do you have an FSM or Haynes Manual? If not..

Doubt the fuel pump is bad, mine never went bad. It was mostly the carburetor either worn or just out of adjustment. Actually, that was ALL of my problems except when the transmission diff grounded out. The carb.

Engine Backfires:
1. Emission fault
2. Fuel or electrical (EFI) fault
3. Incorrect timing
4. Ignition fault (spark plugs, wires, distributor, dist. rotor, etc.)
5. Carb/FI out of adjustment
6. Vacuum leak
7. Valves fault

I didn't feel like thinking, so I copied it, not word-for-word...

1989 Toyota Corolla fuel pump problems!

My daughter just called me as she just got through working. The car is hers and she just told me that the engine is running much better and that it is not back firing anymore. However, she told me that sometimes when she steps on her brakes, the brake pedal catches high and requires much more foot pressure to bring the car to a stop. This sounds like a vacuum leak some where between the brake booster and engine. So, it looks like she is dealing with two different problems. Hopefully by switching the fuel lines, I solved that problem. I will check for a vacuum leak tomorrow. I'll post my findings as soon as I find something. Thank you for your support.

Ok, today the brakes failed. The brake pedal now goes to the floor, and does not come back up while pumping it. This tells me that the brake master cylinder has failed. The brake booster may be faulty as well. As for the fuel pump, the engine starts up on a dime everytime and runs fine. Thanks again for your support.
