4agte levin build

Currently doing a 4agze to 4agte conversion on my 89 levin. Here are few pics and info on the build.

when I 1st got the car 3 years ago.

stock small port

added a late ae92 sc12, ecu, harness and intercooler to the stock red top. Blew the head gasket the 2nd time i drove the car after build due to a cracked radiator. rebuilt with ae101 4agze pistons the 2nd time around.

The car hasnt been driven much in the last year and a half due to lack of $ to keep it on the road and me tinkering with the engine everytime i get it working good. This past december i took the car to the track and run a disappointing 18.0 at 83mph due to a boost leak and al season tires. took the sc12 down immediately and startyed the turbo conversion.

rb25det t28 turbo

1st attempt at a turbo manifold, used chopped stock manifols and t25 flange. ( mock up on old dummy 4ag head and block)

manifold was tacked but when i tried fitting it inside car the turbo would end up hitting oil filter of front motor mount depending on orientation. It could have been fixed with some more time but i decided to scrap the idea and moved on to the 2nd manifold attempt.

Stock 5afe manifold converted to 4age top mount manifold.

I basically took a 5afe manifold. drilled out a hole to its top welded the turbo flange with some studs over the hole then blocked off the manifolds original outlet with a piece of flat steel. I also welded a 4age 20v head flange to the manifold and re drilled it to fit 16v head. Its not the prettiest thing but it will work for now and i don't have to relocate oil filter or anything.

The two outer exhaust ports didnt exactly line up to flange

we used a torch to burn out excess material because the welds were to tough to grind down with a grinding stone.

I have some more pics of progress of the car but my camera took a shit on me so i will try to get it uploaded asap.

Nice levin! Are you going to clean that rusty block up?

(if you know anyone with another, I have a pair of levin headlights for sale with integrated yellow fogs)

Thats not the block i'm gonna be using. I just picked this one out from the rain in the yard along with the head to use as a prop when we were building the manifold. my 4agze is still in the car with the small port NA intake manifold on.

How much you looking at for the headlights ?

hope you mocked it up in the car first ? i have pop ups an dont have room to top mount but with the levin hood you may have room.. just dont wanna see you not be able to close your hood or have that turbo smack it when you get on it !

already did a mock up in car, turbo doesnt hie hood even when i have compressor outlet facing up. Awaiting a part for the turbo from a friend so i can start bolting everything on car. The harness is being cleaned of all the extra connectors by a friend as i write this. Got an authentic rb25det turbo last weekend and took it apart to get a part from it. came to the conclusion that the turbo i had previously thought was a ball bearing t28 from a rb25 wasnt so. still cannot figure out what it is or where it came from.

Ok this thread is long overdue for an update. Work on the car has been really slow due to school, work etc. lots has changed , engine was fired up about 2 months ago, everything seemed ok but a crack in cylinder head between exhaust ports 3 and 4 was spewing out oil. The decision was made to swap in another head, this time a ported and polished small port head along with another genuine 20v semi metal head gasket Engine is 100% done , just missing to finish down pipe and intercooler piping. Should be done in a week or so.

Couldn't find 4age throttle cable and 4agze cable was too short, homemade throttle cable.

this is how the car sits now

Engine done

lots of room for downpipe with top mount set up

Intercooler pipe mock up. (not actual routing)

some goodies. hks 256 cams

good to see some progress, are those cams the earlier 8.3mm lift or the newer 8.1mm's, and where did you find them in ditch? What are you planning to run for exhaust?

cams are early 8.3 mm lift. Ditch ? lol no. grime you see on cam is actually grease we coated it with to protect it from rust. We also have a set of 272's as well.

plans for exhaust, 2.5 inch open downpipe for now and full 2.5 or 3 exhaust later on.

haha j/k, looked like rust in the pics, thought mayby you got lucky at the wreckers one day. there is not an abundance of information on cam selection for a turbo 4agte, there are the general guidelines people tend to follow but no really good examples of back to back testing. I found a couple plots on toymods and mr2oc but even some of those were with the sc12. someone was selling a set of web cams here and they were saying had a hard time idling with the mildish 294 grind with stock map gze ecu.

http://forums.club4ag.com/zerothread?id=79703

I was looking to find examples of people still using stock gze map electronics with turbo and different cams to see what a good grind would be for the stock ecu.

I actually intend on doing some tests myself in regards to the cams. Firstly I intend on getting the car going with the stock small port cams , then swap in the 256 hks cams but using the stock cam gears to see how well grounded they are. Next step after that is swap in AEM cam gears we have and do some tuning. This would serve to eduacte myself and other 4ag owners . Might even throw in the 272's in the mix just to see what happens. Working on converting the car to a chipped Honda ecu this year, so that will help with some research and testing.

I agree there isn't much documentation on testing on how map 4age and 4agze ecu reacts with cam changes especially in turbo apps. . Hope I will be able to shed some light.

Cams have been sitting in shop for years lol. No junkyard on my island with anything worth calling "lucky"
