Greetings from the UK! I am running a kit car powered by a 1.4 4A-GE engine from an AE92. The car is running on Delotto 45 carbs and an Omex ECU. I am trying to confirm the specific engine model as I think the distributor cap on the car is not the orginal - at TDC the rota is sitting between pins 3 and 4 in the cap I have, so not even close to #1. I want to know if this is because the dizzy is in wrong or I simply have the wrong cap. Any ideas?
1.4 sounds wrong, should be 1.6L. Do you have any pictures of it? THat'll be the easiest way to tell. Your timing might just be set wrong. Has it been running properly with that cap on it?
Even if it is the wrong cap, if it fits, you should be able to pull the distributor out and turn the rotor one gear tooth at a time till you get it close, and then do the fine tuning with the mount slots.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
if it's close to 4 you might be on the wrong stroke (180 off) or the dizzy is in wrong. The 4age distributors are geared, not keyed, so they can go in incorrectly very very easily.
depending on what year ae92 the motor came from would determine what 4age version it is.

Sorry, it is a 1.6. Just a typo! I will take some pics at the weekend and post. The car has run on this cap, but never very well. The engine at what I assume is TDC (crank marker at 0 and cam markers aligned vertically) the rota is pointing around 12 o'clock. Would be interested to know it this sounds right? It is way off pin #1 on the dizzy!
What year of AE92?? 88-89 came with bigport 4AGE and 90-91 came with smallport 4AGEs, either way the caps are different for both models... that does look like a bigport as the spark plug valley cover has the holes for the wires, where as the smallport cover has no holes.
Try different caps, that almost looks like a smallport cap as it's black(oem Toyota), I'm pretty sure the cap on my old bigport was red (oem Toyota) so you do probably have the wrong one.
you could even try a cap from an AW11 MR2 4AGE motor as it's angled different from the FWD 4AGEs.
Mystery solved. I pulled the dizzy out and aligned it with pin #1 on the cap and it now fires up every time. I reckon I do have the wrong cap installed, but this at least proves the car is working fine. Appreciate the help.
I've had both motors, totally different beasts... notice the caps, yours should have the red cap from the bigport, somehow you got the cap from the smallport.
Interesting... are the dizzy's / caps interchangable? Certainly the screw locations on the big port dizzy are in a completely different place to on my car!
I was just thinking that too... maybe they used the whole assembly... weird.
Then again, you being in the UK could explain it as the North american versions got AFM sensored motors whereas Japan and the rest of the world got MAP sensored motors.
