Angry CV halfshaft / Driveaxle

so im replacing, or trying to rather, the drivers side cv halfshaft on my 92 corolla and i've hit a wall the inner boot tore on the old shaft as i was trying to remove it, so now i have an open joint that is stuck inside the transmission, my haynes told me to pry at it to get it to slide out and i've been trying unsuccessfully. is there something i'm missing? or are there any tricks i ought to know? i would hate to have to get my car towed to a shop. any advice would be greatly appreciated, and i thank you in advance. if you have any questions just ask and i'll do my best to answer it

That may be feasible with a long skinny one, but I think I tried that and no success.

I had problems with removing the driver side axles as well. The passenger side just jumps itself out when needed to.

Best way is to pry it from under or top. Just take breathers in between trying, it actually works! I got pissed off with my axle so many times, gave it for 10 minutes and told myself that it has to come out one way. Tried it again, and the bitch slipped out easily...

i've been prying, and i actually broke the tip of a screwdriver. i only have the car up on jackstands and a jack so i don't have much clearance underneath the car. the 'tulip' is in there good. my friend told me to try putting the car in neutral, do you think that'll help?

Just a thought but maybe try spaying some JB Blaster or something similar to help free it up where it is stuck.

The "tulip" should have three indents in it, each with a slight ridge running accross it.
What you need to do is get a substantial drift, something the size of a 12" long, 1/2" drive socket extension (preferably with an edge), maybe a piece of 1/2"- 5/8" galvanised pipe.
Put the drift against a ridge, and drive the tulip from under the gearbox, at an angle, from the passengers side.
You need a substantial hammer, 3lb or more, with about a 8" - 10" handle, (wear eye protection)
Don't tap it, drive it hard, one good whack.

This works for me every time.

That happened with my 91. I pulled and was left with the inner half of the shaft up to the inner boot. Get a pry bar. A big long pry bar. I have no idea how long mine is because I found it in a field one day and its only done me good. Its curved at the end and flat so it fits snuggly into tight spots. I put it at the top, then at the bottom and pushed and pulled on it, putting it on a different side to work it out. Popped out pretty quickly. Its putting the new one back in thats the hard part. >.<

You are wasting your time trying to pry it out with constant force. Like Donald said, you have to be able to pop it out with sudden force from a hammer against a piece of metal against the flats on the tulip part of the axle. One trick that works for me is to turn the axle 30 or 45 degrees between hits.

LOL, according to the FSM, apparently a fist is sufficient enough to pop out the axle when using a hammer handle and lug wrench.

any specific kind of grease? i have a sentra ive been slowly putting back together doing an engine change since i blew the last one. i can't get the passenger side in. I've shoved and pushed and hammered and it just won't go in. I'm afraid to hit it to hard fearing Ill mess up the threads on the hub end. It gets the first part in easy but when its time to match the splines up it won't go in at all. What kind of grease will do this?

Put the nut on the end end of axle just far enough so it is flush with the end of the shaft. Use a copper or plastic mallet to drive it in. If you don't have a copper or plastic mallet, use a block of wood between the hammer and the end of the shaft. I 've never used grease, but a small amount of just about any kind would be ok if you want to try that. Also, make sure the clip isn't bent or distorted, making it dificult to go in.

they make slide hammers that are for this exact purpose. if there is an autozone or advance auto or something near you they'll probably let you borrow one for free (just a deposit)

that's how I got mine out the last time I pulled it.
