head gasket or cracked head?

I'd rather change the head gasket or get a new head or what ever I need to do rather than junk the car before I go getting that as my answer lol. How do you tell if the head is cracked? I don't see any real cracks. Does the head gasket even looked messed up in any way? What else causes white smoke out the tail pipe immiedatly and slowly dies off. It has an overheating problem as well. I don't think the radiator is cracked. This is on a 91 corolla 5 speed.
