I seem to be having a minor tiff with my car. When I bought her many moons ago, she had a faint whine whenever the clutch was pressed. Moving or at a standstill, she had this whine. Other than that, the clutch ran fine. Here in the last couple of months, the whine has gotten louder. It almost has a grinding sound to it. No weird smells or smoke, though. Also, when feathering the clutch in 1st or R, she seems to want to stall more often. But despite that, the car still drives just fine and I don't hear anything else while the car is in motion.
Any suggestions as to what it might be? I've heard that the throwout bearing might be the culprit, but I have no way to really test that. Car has 234K on her, and she is a 1990 AE92.
Thanks!!

My vote is a bad throwout bearing, but you might as well do the clutch while you're at it with that many miles.
Is replacing the bearing a hard job? What I mean is it more or less similar to the clutch changing (pull out engine/tranny, etc), or is it something similar? Sorry, don't have my shop manual available at the moment...

it's right where the clutch is. so you might as well replace the clutch while you're in there.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is the issue I'm having with the temporary engine in my del Sol... I have no idea how many miles are on it, but in the past few months (I don't drive it much) I noticed the clutch chirps as I'm releasing the pedal to shift into a gear. I have a clutch replacement kit already, but I was going to use it for the rebuild of my original engine. It worries me to even think of driving the Sol with that sound... I've thought about just throwing the new clutch into the crappy temporary engine, then transfer it to the rebuilt engine later on.
i honestly wouldnt worry to much until it has trouble engaging/disengaging. my nova has beenlike this for about 3 years, theclutch is 15years old and the bearing only started 3 years ago. once in awhile it doesnt go in(only from a stop) but its fine to drive no issues.it might justbe the car also. but if its dirveable with no problems dont worry unless itll give you peace of mind to change it
Things just went bad with the car. I think she is mad at me or something. I get in and start her, no problems. Push the clutch in, and.... nothing? CLutch pedal is limp. It goes halfway down to the floor, but nothing. I have to press REALLY hard to get it to go in the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the shifter is able to switch into any gear. Turn off the car, and check the clutch fluid. Top it off a bit. Get back in, and now I can't even start her. Have to almost stand on the clutch pedal to get her to crank. Argh.
Either the throw out bearing up and died over the last 3 days (car had been in the garage since last driven), or I have something new to chase...
