So I have a 1989 corolla, no idea what the model is (manual locks and windows) its got a dohc 1.6 carbed engine. (if ya'll could tell me the model it would be highly appreciated.
So on with the other stuff, I am looking for a little bit more power. I make under 100HP and can't even spin my tires in the gravel. its sad. Just looking for some ideas.. Even if its not a carb replacement. any cheap power upgrades?
hey
it should be an ae92
i have the same engine as you and what i have done is air filter, exhaust, headers it should give me over 100hp now
good luck and if you need n e more info on what i have done just pm me

oh and its an auto
The engine in your car is a 4A-F (not sure about the model of the actual car though as they usually vary between countries). There's not a whole lot you can do in terms of modifications (without changing the engine or going down the forced induction route), but as NZAE92 said, changing the air filter, headers and exhaust will make an improvement.
Even doing a tune-up and changing the leads, plugs, distributor cap, oil etc should make a difference if they haven't been touched for a long time. You can slightly advance the timing to get a bit more power too.
Have a quick search through the forums and you're bound to find more information about how to extract more power out of your engine. This thread might be of some interest to you: 4af performance tuning

would it help performance running the engine cooler? and if I went through and cleaned up the carb?
I intend on converting that thing to a manual eventually unless i find a good one for cheap. mine isn' exactly great. it'd work though

Running the engine cooler as in the operating temperature? Or as in the air intake? If you mean the operating temperature, then no. If you mean getting better air-flow to the carb, then yes. Typical factory induction set-ups are quite poor and only suck in small amounts of air. Try routing the intake pipe somewhere where there is better air-flow, such as behind the front bumper etc. I certainly noticed a slight gain in power when I installed a CAI (cold air intake) on my 5A-FE Corolla. It's a different engine to yours obviously, but the concept is the same.

well my water temp runs a little lower than normal. both my fans are always goin and it keep it nice.
i am gonna try to find a pod like filter for it and get more air flow and hope that'll do some good. Also planning on taking off the carb and getting some carb cleaner and cleaning the piss out of it. its all carboned up.

Lol, that's not good man. Your fans definitely shouldn't be running all the time. Sounds like the sensor on the radiator isn't working anymore. That could be hindering your performance right there as the engine has the most power when it is at proper operating temperature. Wouldn't be helping your fuel mileage either.

if you want more power, the CHEAPEST and MOST EFFECTIVE thing you can do is a complete 4AGE engine swap with manual transmission. You could drop $1000+ on new intake/carb, exhaust, headers, tune-up stuff, etc, and you might gain 10-20 hp at MOST. Or for the same price you could put in the 4AGE EFI engine and gain anywhere from 30-50 hp depending on which generation 4age engine you put it.

Honestly Ive don a few inside a day. it may have taken like 16hrs or something but if you've got a buddy with some experience it can be done in one day.
just make real sure you have everything you need, tools, ecu, fuel tank(if necessary) and an uncut harness (all sensors alt and so on).
Have faith you can find plenty of swaps with tranny and everything for reasonable prices. pull it all and put it all back is all it really is.
