Silly question but does a 91 corolla have a computer you can read codes off of? Or is this specific car too old? If it does where is the location and how do you do it?

I would think that would be obdI

You can go to autozone and they will give you a fancy paperclip and a book. You poke the wire into the obd port and count the blinks.

Does it need to be for a toyota or is it just a universal scanner. Where do you hook it up at? All autozone gives is a paperclip and a book? Whats the book for? The paperclip sounds retarded.

On board diagnostic one. Usually the port is by your left knee just under the edge of the dash, drivers side. You put the clip across two of the contacts and then the check engine light blinks a certine number of times. The book tells you what the code is.

The reason you have to use the paperclip method is because any car before 1996 is OBD1 and EVERY car manufacturer uses different shaped ports and different computer technology. From 1996 on every car uses a standard OBD2 port and computer technology so a standard scanner can be used.

You can go buy an OBD1 scanner and the specific Toyota adapter, but why spend a few hundred bucks when a paperclip and blinking light will give you just as much info. (OBD1 scanners only tell you the number anyways)

This is why for the DIYer OBD1 is easier and cheaper. You can find the OBD1 Toyota codes only too if you search.
