4afe ignition no start help, ecu question?

Replaced entire distributor (new from rock auto) still no spark. I noticed that when I turn key over no check engine light? Shouldnt lite come on for a moment when key is turned over? i am about to order an ecu off ebay, before I do is there anything else to check beside fuses? igniter, coil is all new inside distributor. But if I see no check engine lite, does that mean ecu may be bad?

Thanx Ian

Have you checked the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor rotor (clean it)? It could even be a bad new distributor.

Don't think it would be the ECU.

BTW, isn't Topeka now called Google?

New cap, rotor and plug wires are good. Plugs look good. No plug is firing.

The check engine light not lighting could simply be a burned out bulb in dash cluster. Did you check fuses inside and under hood ? Did you verify whether timing belt is broken by watching to see if distributor rotor turns when someone cranks engine?? Also check the fuses that are in holder that conects to positive battery cable

ok guys. I did check all fuses. Belt is good. Did comp check before i bought dist. each cyl. chkd out at around 205. engine has great comp. got car for $250.00 cause guy couldnt get it running. Its the 5speed all trac corolla. he only tried cap and rotor. im going to varify its the right cap and rotor. Had new clutch and new bearings in rear diff put in about 5k ago. (guy was original owner and had reciepts) Thought it was worth it to get it running. so paid $250.00. Got 100.00 in it with dizzy. All the wiring looks good. ANYONE KNOW which line going into the dizzy is the 12v?

Connect a continuity metre between the 'W' pin on the diagnosis port and the negative battery terminal.

Then have someone put the car on 'on' but 'start' (i.e. the position where the battery light and oil lamp come on).

Does the metre signal continuity. If it does - than the ECU is fine.
If it does not, then the ECU is not turning on.

my 2 cents.
Here's one to check. There's what's called a "Circuit Opening Relay" under the dash on the driver's side, you gotta dig for it a little. But the fuel pump and ignition will NOT fire up unless that baby is workin.

I chopped down a 4afe harness to run off road, and I struggled for days trying to get a spark until I traced down that relay box and wired it back into the harness, and BOOM! She busted off like a champ.

I will try to get some better pictures of my harness so you will know the bare minimum to make it run.

Don't know if you can troubleshoot your problem by wiring diagram but here is a link. Keep scrolling thru till you get to corolla 4AFE (figure7)

Here's a better link if you need to trace the wiring from source to the ignition.

Glancing at diagram it looks like there are two ECU fuses. Did you check them both? Also looks like a feed from the alt fuse which is one of the big ones in the small holder directly off positive cable. Will need an ohmeter to properly check them.

Make sure you are getting voltage to ECU. Very rarely ( if ever) have I heard of those going bad. It's usually something in the wiring feed that is the issue. Take your time and start at very beginning of circuit and work your way back till you find where you loose voltage.. Time consuming but not that hard on Toys.

To make matters a little worse. I dont know which fuses are for what. There was no fuse door, or book for this car. i just checked continuity on each fuses. I need a picture of the junction box on drivers side so I can figure out if I am getting power to the ecu. Thanks
