Hey. My friend went and bought an '88 GT-S to work on as his first car. Apparently, it ran fine before he got it to his house, but died just outside and refused to start again. After a couple minutes, we determined that the battery was dead and, when replacing, that it was for a completely different car (Firebird, I think is what was said). That gets it running, but then it stops and we get a more mechanically inclined friend out. He, and the previous owner, both think it's the fuel pump, so, we order a new one, along with a new filter, pull out the old one and, sure enough, the old one's cracked. After installing those to the best of our abilities (also, with a bit of help from some kitty litter) we get the car to run again. Well...it's died and refuses to try and turn over and we're all at a loss for what it could be now. Any suggestions at all are welcome and could be helpful. Thanks.
Kitty litter in the gas tank will cause your engine not to run, duh!! ;-) I kidding. But yeah first of all, does it crank over but not start? Does it crank over and try to start but not actually start? What exactly is it doing now?

really i thought kitty litter gave you extra torque because it thickens the fuel?? lol
Did anyone check the starter? lol... these are always a problem.
I just had a similar experience too. GSi is still down, too damn busy with work. After digging around in the forum, I found out these 4A starters are notorious for all kinds of weird symptoms before they finally just quit. Each morning when I started the engine, the bendix wouldn't disengage and the starter would keep grinding away for a few seconds with the car running, so I would shut down immediately. Only did it on first start up of the day. It progressively got worse and then started doing the same thing as Castle's friends car. Sometimes it would turn over and start, sometimes nothing. Finally died last week. I suspect bendix spring/gear and brushes. I'll rebuild after hearing the horror stories about cheap Ebay starters not lasting a year. My OEM starter made it almost 130k before it retired. Thats not bad for a part considered one of the few weak links on our AE92s. I've read that they get heat soaked being tucked up under the exhaust manifold.

it's only a problem on 16V 4ages.
on 20Vs and 4AF(E)s the starter is on the intake side so they don't get baked by the exhaust manifold.
I've never had an issue with my starter. (I've had a 4AF and a 20V )

ya the 16v ge's suck! although they are easy access
i had to change my starter with a hot engine. it died at work so i push started it to checkers and changed it in the parking lot lol took 30 mins total due to me burning my hand on the manifold constantly

usually if you hit it with a hammer or something it'll work for a little while and get you home
