If you are talking about a fuel injected motor:

Yes I do also. I believe my problem stems from the cold start injector. I exchanged it out once for a different one and it got better, but now its back to the same way. I think if I clean out the intake manifold of all the sooty gunk, it will get better but we'll have to see.

If it's a 4AF (carb), pump the pedal a couple times before you start it. Anytime it takes more than 2 revolutions to start, I give it a little gas and it fires right up.

For 4AFE/4AGE (EFI), the Cold Start Injector is often the cause (as noted above).

But I guess the most important question is: how long does it take to start? It could be normal.

I HAD the problem before, I used to crank it for about 4-5 seconds for the thing to start in the cold. I just replaced all the temperature sensors and it started right up.

I don't have any problems starting mine anymore though, the "beast" starts like a dime. I do love my 390k mi. Corolla, I'm actually surprised the thing passed the smog check here in Cali. Anyways GL on fixing it.

Also check the cold start timer.
It is the brown water temp sensor on the front of the thermostat housing, under the distributor.
That regulates the cold start injector

There is a resistance check. The manual gives details.
