I've read a lot of places that dums are a good bit lighter than rear discs. looking at my drums vs my disc brakes I find that fairly surprising. The corolla drums are pretty big
does anyone have a disc brake hub/caliper/rotor/etc. lying around that they would be willing to weigh?
all I have is a drum brake that I just took off my car
I should have weighed them both when I was half way done the swap...

Does it seriously matter... I can weigh a disk if I have one at work on saturday if I can remember... but even the the weight difference is neglible, especially when you consider the advantages of the disks over drums...
Drums wont lock up sooner than the front brakes, because theres a brake pressure biasing valve.
Disks are better, but the handbrake causes problems = bad reputation.
i have a gts with 4 wheel disc brakes, when i was doing the brakes my dads friend was telling me that the rear brakes are suppose to lock up before the front brakes? somehow that doesnt make any sense to me

he was wrong

I do have a complete set laying around, waiting to be installed some day. When I get to my workshop again and think about it, I'll weigh them, but don't expect the results soon

Yeah, thats instant loss of control if that happens. Rear brakes dont even necessarily lock at all, besides most of the braking is done with front tires anyways.
thats what i thought and he was like no dude your wrong, i was oh ok lol
I read up on a lot of different proportioning valves when I was decided weather to swap mine or not. and it seems like some of them send pressure to the back first for drum brakes because it takes a decent amount of force to start to move them due to the spring, but once they get moving, it take a lot less force so the pressure is capped off.
This might have been what he meant, but the rears are never going to lock first nor do you want that to happen. even at equal braking power the rear of the car will get really squirrelly because it has less weight while braking.

that was my logic when i was trying to explain my understanding that your car weighs more in front and is lunging forward when you break. also tried to explain if the rears locked up first it would be similiar to putting your rear tires on like burger king trays and pulling the e brake trying to drive around the back end will go all over the place and also my i took our 06 corolla out and did a stop test on it (no abs) and it locked up the front first and it has drum rears, still didnt believe me lol so i just grabbed another beer

Best option!
Thats what happens with me and some of my friends all of the time... we are all in the same Auto Tech program, and yet they still want me to look at their car before they decide whats wrong, then they want my help to fix it... needless to say I have made a rule:
"You want help? I want beer!"
