The distributor runs off the exhaust camshaft, a timing belt runs that camshaft. It could be a broken timing belt if all your electricals are in working condition, including your spark plugs, plug wires, distributor rotor, etc. The street way to check to see if your timing belt has bit the dust, take the oil filler cap off, have someone crank the engine and observe the cam shaft that is visible through the oil filler. If it's no moving when the engine is trying to be started, your timing belt is gone. If the cam spins, recheck all the eletricals. It's possible something could've been overlooked.
(if the engine starts while you are observing the camshaft with the oil cap off, be sure your helper immediately turns off the engine. It can spew oil if it starts)
