1992 clutch question

First off I'm sorry but the search tool didn't provide me with the information I'm looking for.

Obviously I have a 1992 corolla sedan with the stock 4afe 5spd manual. my clutch is going out and after looking at the parts lists from local shops it appears they used 2 different sized clutches. a 7 7/8" up to May of 92 and a 8 3/8" after that. my question is how do i find out which one I have? and if mine is the 7 7/8" can i just swap it up to the 8 3/8"? seeing as they only sell one sized flywheel i would think i could step it up with a good resurface job or new flywheel. or would this cause some kind of internal interference with the clutch fork? or other parts? some help and insight on this would be well appreciated thank you.

It would depend on the bore and stroke of the master cylinders, assuming the longer body has a longer stroke could be folly. You would have to disassemble one of each to know. The equations to see what it would do to clutch fork throw are pretty simple, you just need the numbers to input.

You could check to see if they use a different slave cylinder.

I think ae92 4afes used the 200mm flywheel and ae101 moved to 212mm. I believe the measurement is dia of the friction surface... could be wrong, I never measured the different flywheels i have. I do know that all 4afe flywheels are the same actual size when it comes to the ring gear. You won't cause any problems by fitting the larger flywheel, it has the same tooth pattern for the transmission input shaft and it is virtually completely the same other than clutch surface wise.

The newer years including models with the 7afe use the flywheel with the bigger clutch but they have virtually the same transmission. The interchangeability is nice.

The clutch hydraulic system should be fine.

thank you for the replies and yes i'm sure the difference in the 2 clutch disc's is the surface area. I guess as long as i just buy a new flywheel to match the bigger 8 3/8" clutch set I should be fine then. I have no way of knowing which one is in the car until i tear it apart and at that point it will be a little late to wait for who knows how long for the smaller clutch set. thanks again.

Wouldn't the starter location be a bit different for a larger and smaller flywheel? I'd assume you'd want the proper flywheel for this reason.
