sunroof

okay so when i first got my car i posted the problems with it. Well i finally investigated the issue with the sunroof. i pulled it off and looked at it. so the motor is working fine it seems that the guides that attach to the driver side of the sunroof the plastic gears are stripped and seems that they need to be replaced. so i briefly looked at the setup but how do you get to those tracks and replace em? seems kinda like a bitch...

I don't believe so. I don't remember exactly but I think all you do is remove the sunroof liner and that exposes the bolts that hold on the sunroof to the track mechanism. Unscrew those, remove the sunroof panel. The track should then be exposed to unscrew. (All from the top of the car)

Yep, once the panel is off the rest comes off from the top.

I'd just find another sedan (same as in the coupe) or coupe in the wrecker with a sun roof and replace the whole track.

So there are no aftermarket replacement parts or whatever? The problem I am seeing is the age old gears going to crap themselves (from the ones found in a wrecking yard).

I need to replace mine but have not taken it apart yet. If it is just the gears, wonder if those can be just replaced or ???

i believe that you actually have to take the headliner off to be able to take the track off

I replaced both of my sunroof's broken drive belts last month. ($250 for both at Toyotapartszone.) The portion of the belt that actually connects to the sunroof is made of plastic. These get brittle and eventually break.
The first step is to remove the sliding bit of headliner attached to the sunroof by prying down on the forward edge. You can then access and remove the eight bolts holding the sunroof, then lift it out.
After removing the mirror, sun visors, passenger assist handle, sunroof switch assembly, sunroof headliner moulding(around the edge of the opening) and A-pillar covers the head liner can be pulled down in the front.
Then remove the electrical connections to the sunroof motor, remove the three bolts mounting the sunroof motor and pull it out. Then remove the two bolts running from underneath the roof into the sunroof assembly.
The remaining screws are all accessed from above, be aware that these may be extremely stubborn. Once the air deflector screws and the sunroof assembly screws are removed the entire unit is pulled up and forward through the opening. The sticky sealant on the bottom of the assembly will offer some resistance.
Once removed, the assembly has two screws holding the three pieces of the U-shaped assembly together. I had to drill both of these stubborn screws out and find replacements at the local hardware store.
You can then remove the belts, clean the assembly of the years of dirt, lube it up (including the new belts) and reinstall.
Once reinstalled the sunroof operated perfectly with no further adjustments required.

Good post, I forgot about the two bolts on the inside. It's been a few years since I've tackled one of these. Most are so rusted the bolts aren't even there anymore.

This might be a good sticky "how to"
