Totaled 88 SR5 and insurance

Someone backed into my car while it was parked in-front of my house. They broke the mirror and put a large dent in the side of the door. Their insurance company deemed it as a total loss and are offering me $800 if I keep the car with a salvaged title or $1200 if they take the car from me.

Autobody shops were quoting me $1500 to fix everything, however, I managed to find a door/mirror in my color on craigslist for $25. Does anyone have experience with insurance companies and does $800 sound right? I feel like they’re lowballing me on the $800 since I would have to drive around with a salvaged title even though my car is in perfect running condition.

You can use KBB.com to find out the value for your car specificly with mileage, options, etc.

If possible, keep the insurance out of the deal if you can cut a deal with the person who hit your car. Basically what I did on my recent two minor accidents.

Your damage can easily be fixed (door and mirror replacement) assuming no other damage has been inflicted with little money.

Too late, the other car was a brand new BMW so they wanted to go through the insurance. Everything was fixed for $25 but I still haven't collected the insurance money.

No one in my family has dealt with insurance before so we have no idea what we are doing. KBB doesn't go back to 88 but a 90 is listed at $1,360...

I guess it depends on what insurance they have and who they have and varies by state. But since it's their fault.... They could've kept you out of their insurance report, maybe.

If you're not into scoring money, just take $100 or how much it costs you to get the parts and be done. They can afford a BMW...

it's a free $800 :-P

a salvage title isn't that big of a deal on a car that old. If you document what happened for it to get a salvage title you can explain it when you sell it.

that's about as much as I would expect to get from the insurance company for these cars. They're old and not worth much. I bought mine for $600 5 years ago :-P

I just got 1600 from insurance from a monor accident, they totaled the car but didn't take or change the title. I asked like 10 times if the car would be salvage or if the would be taking it and they repeatedly said they didn't want the car and because it was so old (88) they didn't have to salvage the title. This was like 3months ago but shouldn't be all that different now. I live in NY the laws maybe different than whee you live.
