cruise control

First, awesome sight and thanks. I've got a 1992 Toyota Corrolla and when I set the cruise, it will drop down to about 10-15 mph then suddenly accelerate, dropping down to second gear. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks..

From the toyota service manual:

Check for error codes, there are two types to check. Type A Turn the key to on, hold the set/coast in the on position and push the main cruise switch on. Now let go of the set/coast switch and count the flashes on the main switch light as each represents a code and things to try.

2 flashes = Set coast switch on and normal (when held on in this mode)

3 flashes = Resume/accel switch on and normal (when held on in this mode)

5 flashes vacuum switch on and normal.

Front wheels off ground and Engine idling in the above mode test the following: Step on the brake, no code should flash. Put parking brake on, no code should flash. Clutch (or neutral safety switch) Press the clutch or put the car in park, no code should flash.

Type B codes done while driving 10mph or less: turn on the cruse control. Press the set/coast switch three times in two seconds.

Continues steady flash = system normal

2 long flashes separated by 4 seconds = Actuator circuit abnormal

2 flashes then 1 flash separated by 1.5 seconds = Speed sensor abnormal

3 flashes then one flash separated by 1.5 seconds = Resume/accel switch abnormal

3 flash then 3 flashes separated by 1.5 seconds = Resume/accel and set/coast switches abnormal.

Post if it comes up with anything.

Red 91SR, Thanks for the info. Haynes didn't have anything like that. I tried the above tests and all seem to pass except for the resume/accl., the light stayed on when it was suppose to flash 3 times. But I'm not sure what that means. Could you enlighten me on this. Thanks alot!!

If you want to PM me your email I'll see if I can scan the trouble shooting pages from the manual for you.

Couple things to check. Make sure all the vacuum lines are good to the cruise system and all under the hood for that matter. Make sure all the harness plug for the vacuum pump, cruise pot, vacuum valve (all in the cruise pot area under hood) are clean and not corroded. It could be anything from a bad or sticky cruise pot, bad or sticky vacuum valve, bad or sticky vacuum pump, bad cruise ECU (behind right kick panel passenger side). Faulty speed signal from instrument cluster to cruise ECU.

So many things to check but start with the basics like checking for corroded connections etc.

Red91SR, Thanks again for the info. I'm not too familiar w/ the cc system but I'll check those items out. My email is backwudzsheri***mail.com if you'd find time to send the trouble shooting guide, I would really appreciate it. Thanks again!
