91 ignition question

hello all.
my problem: my '91 has a little attitude problem when it comes to starting. there isn't a noticable pattern, it just decides whether or not it wants to start. everything else works fine when i turn the key.

my proposed solution: due to the fact that a new ignition would cost me about $50 + change, i was going to put in a switch routed off the ignition for starting the car.

my proposed solutions problem: i have never seen this before and i have no idea what it is a patch-in for

(black & white wires are running from the ign, red & brown = ground, blue & green go into the car)

problem is, according to the haynes diagrams, the B/W wire it is running through, is the wire i will be wanting to put the switch on. this little do-dad is also rigged the same way i'm supposed to rig the switch.

i just wanted to get some other opinions about what i should do. if there is a better way to fix the ign. that is super cheap, i'm all ears.

josh

That gray plug that you say youve never seen before looks like a plug for a security system or remote start maybe? but i know for sure that my car doesnt have it

i would say before you go all out on changing things that you might just wanna get rid of that and rewire it like it was new and see how that holds up

if that doesnt work i can take pictures of how i put in a push button ignition on my car without screwing to much stuff up i think i only tapped into two different wires and i got it to work off of the key or the button

Before you go tearing up your ignition switch read this link. It's probably not your switch but most likely the solenoid contacts inside starter are shot.

so should i keep the wires on it doubled up or run singles?

i ruled out the starter and solenoids as the problem because the previous owner replaced it about a month before i got the car and there were none of the symptoms associated with a problematic starter. i appreciate the idea though.

@draws: i wouldn't be adverse to seeing how you modded in your switch
