Engine swap help, 1987 Fx16 & 1988 Corolla GT-S

Hello everyone!
I race at skagit speedway in a class called the Hornet class. (www.skagitspeedway.com)
I have 2 cars:
1987 Toyota Corolla FX16
1988 Toyota Corolla GT-S

the 88 GT-S I have run for about 3 season with no problems running at 7500 rpms all day long. The 87 FX I built because at the time I thought the motor was the same and since the car was a lot lighter that it would be super fast. I blew u the 87 fx on the 1 st lap I ever raced it at about 7800 rpm. On to my questions:

What is the difference between the motor in the 87 FX16 and the 88 GT-s? They look the same and are very close to the same HP & TQ and they are the same size.

How much work would it be to swap out the FX motor with a 88 on up 1.6 GT-S motor? Do I need all new wiring harness and ECU?

My 88 GTS is pretty trashed from so many races so I need a new car soon. I really want my FX16 car on the track. Any help would be great. Here is a few pics of my cars so you can get an idea of what I do. Neither car has been painted yet.

I think that pinched upper radiator hose could be a culprit.

Chances are there was no rev limiter on the 87 FX... if not, then the motor was already on it's way out.

Google 4AGE and look at the info pages on it.

That sounds accurate to me, my GTS will bounce off the rev limiter, the FX just blew up. Are the motors interchangable between the 2? It seems as if the GTS motor has better rod bearings by 2mm. and slightly more power.

the electricals are a bit different on the 88 gts. i could remember that the 87 fx-16 has a rev limiter because my buddy used to have one and used to bounch it of the rev limiter all the time. 4age engines are good if they were taken good care of. there is an endurance race around here called the lemon race. it is a 2 day 7hr race. some people i know used a 87' mr2 with a bad cam bearing that was scorched like crazy. it ended up finishing 3rd with no engine problems except 1 blown tranny. so chances where that your old fx16 had a bad engine already.
