if you're running a stock engine with the stock PCV system, you dont need a catch can and you dont want one either as most of them are vented. Therefor your PCV system would suck air through the catch can vent and into the intake, thus creating a vacuum leak.

and since you live in california, doing that would be illegal

the catch can should be connected to the pcv outlet on your valve covers and then connected to the intake manifold or intake runners, or just vented to atmosphere with a filter, or exhaust, all of it is probably illegal in cali

Here's a DIY from the 7th Gen Corolla section. Should be the same procedure for your 6th Gen:

Without a catch-can, all that oil/carbon gunk builds-up on the tips of the injectors and can cause pre-igntion (pinging) over time.
I read the 7th gen write-up and thats pretty much wrong. The pintle stays fairly clean due to the cleaning agents in fuel, it wouldnt cause much issues and the same cleaning effect with the swirl of the intake air keeps the cylinders quite clean and wouldnt cause pinging. Pinging can be caused by a badly done catch can tho. A 4A-F/FE doesnt have that much compression to cause pre ignition with some carbon particles, also with modern cylinder heads thats really not going to happen. I can see that happening in side valve heads of yester year or something like that.

I'd say that the EGR is alot worse than the PCV. My 4A-F which only had a pcv stayed quite clean intake wise, but the 4A-FE intake manifold I got was filled with shit, but that was from the EGR. Still, it wouldnt really matter that much, most cars still function quite well even tho they've never been attended to other than the basic maintenance. You should really see a high mileage corolla... I mean something with 300,000-500,000km on the odo, they still work fairly well.

I'm all for catch cans on cars that need them, such as cars that run no PCV system and need to have it for track use. I just have two hoses on my car going to the ground... lol

does this look any bit correct to you guys.

on the white part i blocked off that and added a air breather.
blue and yellow are the hose running to the oil catch can.

After seeing all the crap in my engine's intake from the oil getting into the air/fuel mix, I'd love to do away with the PCV -> intake.
