4a-fe to a 4a-gze?

Ok I found a '88 MR2 with a 4a-gze for the donor motor. I got both the wiring harness and ECU. I'm planning on replacing the 4a-fe in my '92 corolla 4dr. I have an A131L 3 speed auto in it at the moment. Question #1- Will I have problems with the starter location? #2- Will the A131L handle the increase in HP and Torque? #3- Will the engine mount line up or am I going to have to custom make one? #4-Are there any other clearance issues I should attend to before the actual drop-in?

On another note, I will be converting to a manual tranny at a later date. What should I go with? C-60 maybe?

1 No you wont have problem with starter location, mine was exhaust side mounted then i switched to intake mount. you may just have to lengthen wires.

2 auto tranny will handle it just fine.

3 mounts will be fine and identical except for gearbox mount IIRC

4 Not really

I would go for a c52 or if you can , a c56

1. My starter is already on the intake side. Not sure where it is on the 4a-gze though. I think it is on the exaust side. If all I will have an issue with is wire length then I'm sitting pretty
3. What is IIRC? Noob question I know lol.

was the mr2 an auto car? If it was I would try and use the transmission from it and modify the linkage or at least try take measurements of both the torque converters as you won't be able to use your stock flexplate as

4af/4afe crank = 6 bolt

4age/4agze crank = 8 bolt

The best thing you can hope for is that you have/can locate a flexplate from an auto 4age/4agze and that your 4af/e torque converter will bolt up to it or can be made to fit it. Another option is to find a transmission from a 20v blacktop as that will last alot longer than your stock auto trans will, that or manual swap would be the smart choice.

Man I'm glad you said something about the flexplate lol I totally forgot about that lmao. As far as the tranny goes, I am planning to do the conversion at a later date. You think I could just buy a flexplate that will work for the setup I'm using?

try the classifieds @ club4ag or put up a wanted to buy ad, lots of guys must have one laying around from a rwd 20v swap. you'll have to take a chance or do some research to see if the 20v or aw11 4agze flexplate/torque converter will work with your stock trans.

Ok I see no reason why it won't work if you get the 4age flex plate and converter. You can get them for peanuts at junk yards and on forum classifieds like 4door said.
