I am in the market for a new muffler, I am looking for one that is a decent power gain but doesn't sound like a rice burner. would buying one with a silencer help? I would also prefer that this muffler would be a direct replacement (aka not trying to make a universal one fit). any suggestions? (I was thinking about the one from Ansa)
I'd highly suggest getting a baffled muffler, such as a Dynomax Super Turbo, Magnaflow or Flowmaster. These not only look stealth, greatly improve the flow and reduce back pressure, but also don't sound like a riced out Honda when you accelerate.
I recently installed a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on my 7th Gen Corolla and couldn't be happier (don't be fooled by the name, they're suitable for all applications). It's very quiet at idle and when driving at the speed limit, but is noticeable once you put your foot down and get into the higher RPM range. I was also able to utilise all of the factory muffler mounts too.
It all comes down to personal preference in regards to how loud or quiet you want it, but if you find it too loud or too quiet for your liking then you can replace the factory resonator on your exhaust pipe to achieve the sound you're after. I personally experimented with 3 different resonators until I got the sound I was truly after, but this shouldn't be a problem for you as I was using 2" piping and had no catalytic converter.
This is a photo of my Dynomax Super Turbo muffler that I fitted along with my 2" exhaust a few weeks ago. I also got a 3" chrome tip welded on the end:

+1
I also have a generic turbo style muffler like the dynomax installed and I think it sounds nice and meaty. I do also have a "cherry bomb" glasspack or resonator just behind the CAT also. I have all the parts to do a new exhaust system just not the time to do it. Too bad internet video never does exhaust sound justice otherwise I could try to record how it sounds.
Not sure who you're referring to, but I'll post one up anyway. The video camera doesn't pick up the true sound as good as in real life, but here's a video of my Dynomax muffler on my 7th Gen (don't worry, the smoke is from all the crap burning off inside the exhaust). There are two other videos on YouTube that I made too, each with different resonators. You can view them in my channel. I was amazed at the difference it makes with different sized resonators - Although like I said earlier, this won't be a problem unless you remove your catalytic converter as it's essentially like one large resonator as it is. Anyway, here's the vid:
Nice sound iŽd like it!!!!! make me start think in get one for myself, do you have headers or still have the originals?
I've got headers. My exhaust system consists of: Headers, 4-2-1 front pipe, no catalytic converter, 2" exhaust piping, 1x 10" resonator (2" in diameter), 1x 18" resonator (4" in diameter), Dynomax Super Turbo muffler and a 3" weld-on chrome exhaust tip.

I don't like high rev weed wacker sounds either. I've thought about flowmasters and magnaflow.
Unfortunately, damn sure my 20v isn't going in before August (emission test) so I def have to replace my entire exhaust cuz of leaks. But I'm planning on throwing on either of the two brands of mufflers.
That is what i decided. i ordered the hks cat back that is posted earlier. seems like a good deal and no welding need either (I know how to weld but i would rather not have to do it when it is 105+ out)
