OEM Corolla's have a C-52 gearbox attached to their 4A-FE engine
Can't help you with a price I'm afraid. I have no idea what US junkyards ask for a used gearbox

Prices I have seen here in NC run from $75 at a u-pull-it, to $400 at a they-pull-it salvage yard

Both will fit. They are in essence the same, only the gear ratio's are different. (And some C-52's have two 'starter humps' but that doesn't affect anything)
The 4A-FE in my AE92 Hatchback has a C-52 attached to it, so that will defenitly work

corollas and geo prizms I think the 7th gen corollas came with C52s as well. The GT-S version is going to be sportier due to the gearing, but get worse gas mileage.

you can also get a C56 from a japanese blacktop or silvertop 20V 4AGE (a lot of RWD corolla guys get rid of them when they swap.

I thought the C-52 was the one with the starter mounting location both front and rear, while the C-50 only had one mount location?

I have seen a couple of gearboxes with front and rear mount locations on AE92s with 4A-FEs, one of which I owned.

A C-50 and a C-52 look very similar and they are very similar. They share many parts. The key factor is that a C-50 has a boss or hump for the starter motor on the front side of the transmission case. (The front side is away from the differential, or if looking at one on a car, the exhaust side of the engine.) On the other hand, the C-52 has two starter bosses, one in the front and one in the back. The normal 1.0 kW or 1.4 kW starter can be bolted in place on the front position under the exhaust manifold. The 1.4 kW starter from a supercharged MR2 can be bolted to the rear boss. I have seen C-52s that have the bolt holes already drilled and tapped for the starter in the rear position and I have seen others that need to be drilled and tapped but the mounting points are there.

That's interesting, because I thought 4AFs all had rear mounted starters which would lead me to believe that C50s mounted to 4AFEs would have (if indeed only have one hump) their one hump in the rear.

Blah, this subject never has any definite answers.

Ghost - I'd recommend looking for the C52 and then only get a C50 if you can't find one.
