I don't know where the rpm signal comes from but I'd start checking the ignition system.

Check wiring at distributor for breaks and loose plug in connections. Check to see if timing belt is broken. Verify by pulling distributor cap and have someone crank engine to see if rotor turns.

Yes, a faulty ignition system is one of the things that will cause that to happen.

best and easyiest way without splicing anything to use an external (aftermarket) tach is to get the signal from the IG- on the diagnostic port.

was the car running previously? if so did you change somthing, if you did im guessing that after that change the car wasn't running. also its not a bad idea to check the basics, cam timing, ignition timing.

Check the connection where you hooked on tach wire to distributor wiring to make sure it isn't shorting out to ground. It should be soldered, well taped and in some protective sheath (heat shrink tubing ) to prevent it from shorting to ground. If you made your connection with one of those crimp connectors try replacing it with a new one. You might also try experimenting by disconnecting the tach wiring from the distriburor wiring to see if it will start that way.

What do you mean you wouldn't be able to start your car? I thought you couldn't start your car? Do you mean you are able to CRANK the engine but it won't start? In the case of a broken timing belt, you WOULD be able to crank the engine and it wouldn't start. Take off the distributor cap and have someone crank the engine. If the rotor doesn't turn, then it is likely your timing belt has broken. That would also possibly cause no RPM signal since the distributor isn't turning (where the RPM signal comes from I believe)
