tricks to removing and installing a transmission

Ok so when your taking a transmission off and putting one onto a front wheel drive car or more specifically a 91 rolla, what are some tricks for getting it off the engine and putting it on. I'm certain you don't have to take the engine out since the passenger side engine mount will let the engine swivel but what items do people use to get it on and off. All I have is an engine hoist. So what is your method?

Raise up the front and put two axle stand under the car. Remove all the parts that are in the way in the engine compartiment. Remove the subframe and the downpipe. Undo the 3 other enginemounts and use the engine hoist to swivel down the engine so you can remove the gearbox...

A transmission jack is your best friend.
Borrow or rent one, unless you are one of those real macho weight lifter types.

You will need to jack the front up real high to clear the transmission on a jack. I don't remember the exact height, but you will want to use jack stands that are taller than the shortest ones sold at Auto Zone, I think 3ton.

I've looked on ebay at some of them and youtube.

This was from harbor freight.

Hopefully you don't mean something like this.

With something this high, there is no way you would get it under a car as short and small as a corolla. Even if you got tall jack stands.

Yeah I was looking at the harbor freight site. Whats the difference in operation and how you would have the transmission on it, between the 450 and 800 lb jacks? The 450 would be cheaper, and I don't think the transmission itself is anywhere more than maybe 300lbs tops.

I can't say for sure about the smaller unit, but the 800lb jack can tilt in any direction and has a nice wide attach plate and base. This works out particularly well when you are trying to align (tilt forward/aft/left/right) and jack at the same time.

I bought mine to do a V6 Camry transmission, and it was on sale for about $80 at the time.

Go for the 450. The transmission shouldn't weight over 120lbs.

I'm seeing a chain in the pic for the 800. Do you just wrap the chain around the transmission or how does it hold down?

Yes. The chain goes over the transmission, hooks on one side and a bolt tightens it up on the other.
The setup is a bit chinsy, but it works. A strap would probably be better.

If you decide to buy one instead of renting it, look in almost any auto magazine, there are usually Harbour Freight coupons in the advertisement section to the back.

A manual trans can't be too heavy as I was able to lift mines and I'm weak. I'd say ghostyman is about on with his 120lbs. Definitely the jack would help alot! I was barely able to get it into my truck bed.

What! No Car & Driver or Road & Track?
Those coupons are worth the price of a magazine. If there is not a coupon for the transmission jack, there is usually a generic one for 20% off

I would guess about 120 pounds or less, but lifting it into a truck bed is different to trying to align the input shaft and dowels while you support it.

Well, I haven't taken a transmission off an engine with the engine still in the compartment. I want a c160. But before I go get it, I want to take the tranmission off mine and put it back on so I know how to do that. I really thought of doing a blacktop or the 4agze but I'm not really sure as to how I would go about with the electrical part with having to switch the wires over and such.

Oh definitely. I didn't mean to say that it could be lifted to install it. It was merely a way to guess it's weight.
