4000rpm Cut Out

I've been running my 20VST swap for approx. 1000 miles now. It's been running well outside of a few tuning issues. The idle has been a little odd (not consistent, sits between 900 and 1400 rpm - different each time I stop).

Then about a week ago it would randomly cut power/throttle between 2 and 3K rpms. It only happened twice and stopped. Last night as soon as I hit 4k rpm i lost power/throttle, after the tach dropped below 2K it seemed to reset and would drive fine until I hit 4K again. After driving for about 20 min. and keeping it under 4K it worked fine and would rev higher.

I'm thinking bad TPS, maybe bad grounds or electrical connections on a sensor, VVT? I've heard of others with a similar problem but found no solution so far. I've also heard something about a "safe mode" causing a similar problem.
