89 4a-c idle probs

89 carolla sedan 4a-c. fixed the AAP problem and it cleared the raw gas in #1 problem, but was still smokey and rough idle.I tried and tried different things,i finally unhooked the egr pipe from the cat converter leading to the air cleaner housing.this solved %80 of the issues.it gets too a point where it has no play in between too low and too high idle on idle adjust screw.Butterfly or choke stuck? If i put my hand over the air cleaner intake tube and cover it,the idle smooths out COMPLETELY!Thank you for ALL suggestions,as I am not ASE,but broke!

Yep, sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. I just went through this with my Celica. You can try spraying carb cleaner at various suspect places to see if the idle smooths out. Try replacing all the vacuum lines and gaskets like the intake manifold gasket, carb base gaskets. If that doesn't work, rebuild the carb, and then if that doesn't work, replace it. Unfortunately for me I took it all the way to the end replacing the carb and it finally works right. I still don't know what was wrong with the original carb, but I'm going to blow it up to punish it for causing me all this frustration.
