Question 88 4afe cooling fan stays on all the time...

so my stepfather's 88 has an issue with the cooling fan staying on all the time, what are some common causes for this problem? I've already tried swapping out the fan relay just to see if that was an issue but it made no difference........something to do with the cooling system telling the car to turn it on maybe ? I haven't had much time to look at it yet..........

I would say coolant temp switch (not the sensor, there are different sensors for the fan and gauge) or it could be the AC high pressure switch.

it was the coolant temp switch. I had a hard time locating one because apparently they changed mid way through 1988, so , after paying 56.99 for the wrong one and returning it I went to pick n pull and got 5 for 2 dollars. The first one I put in worked perfectly and now I have four extras!!!

it's located on what looks like the thermostat housing just under the distributor. There are two electrical plugs coming from that housing it will be the larger of the two.

location of engine coolant temp sensor
there is a pic in this thread and a picture of the location.....I'd take pics myself and post them but apparently swimming with your camera in your pocket is not recommended! the temp switch is the one with the blue end

sounds like you are having the same problem I had. The blue one in that thread is for a later-1988 model and up. The parts store I went to first said that anything after june 1988 would use that particular blue one and anything before that a different coolant switch. My stepfathers car was manufactured in may of 88 so the switch looks like that except where the threads end is about as long as it gets, it's probably 3/4 of an inch shorter. Weird thing is, when I pulled all of those coolant switches out of the junkyard, no matter what 6th gen year corolla I pulled them out of they seemed to be the correct one for my car. It wasn't until I came across a geo prizm when I walked past the domestics on the way out that I pulled one of those longer ones in that photograph.

Oh and it depends on who you talk to and where you go as to what that blue switch is called, some places and people call it a fan switch (everywhere online almost) some call it a coolant temp switch (both auto parts stores I went to) The white sensor in that thread is a coolant temp SENSOR not a switch, I couldnt tell you from what year....
