valve adjustment

Someone told me the 4afe's valves use shims. So does this mean they arn't adjustable with an allen wrench and a box wrench?

Thats exactly what it means, thers no rockers to adjust, you replace the shims with different thicknesses to get proper valve clearance.

So do the shims compress to where they need replacing?

No not really, usually they have to be checked and replaced when valve seats are re-cut.
