Could use advice on timing belt + parts

My elderly uncle has a 1990 Corolla DX with the 1.6 Liter 4A-FE engine. It needs the timing belt replaced with also the associated parts that are usually replaced.
I need advice on what I may be missing. It would help a lot as I am on pain meds and cannot do the job myself. I just posted on the avalon forum with an abs problem as my cancer is back. Problems up the ass!

Here is what I have for genuine toyota parts
timing belt 13568-19135
cam seal 90311-35040
timing cover/crank seal 90311-32020
timing belt tensioner spring 90507-18017
crankshaft pulley 13521-15010
valve cover gasket 11213-15050
toyota rtv sealant FIPG (form-in-place-gasket)

Napa says the water pump can be a 7 hole or an 8 hole? He says there is no way to know until the motor comes apart. I am getting quotes from a couple of local mechanics as I am too weak. Napa says he has both. So, one water pump. He says comes with gasket. If so, the mechanic can use the gasket or the expensive FIPG. It's a bribe- gonna tell the mechanic it's factory approved and to keep it. mechanics work hard, they like presents!

Napa also has in stock the timing belt tensioner.

I heard one guy had problems with his new tensioner spring, will tell mechanic to leave alone if not busted. Guy on this board said was too long and diameter wrong.

Can you think of anything else? I would like my uncle to get this car fixed properly for the next owner and was thinking of when I have kicked the bucket for my uncle to buy my '98 avalon xls.

Any advice would be appreciated, guys!

Yeah and they get paid for the job, I've never given my mechanics presents.

I'd say the water pump has 7 holes...IIRc

The timing belt should be an easy job, shouldnt cost alot and shouldnt take that long.

Anyways take care man.

Are you referring to the valve/cam cover gasket there? If so, then you're supposed to use both the gasket (it's more a seal/o-ring than a gasket) and the FIPG, you run a bead of the FIPG (or a similar RTV gasket maker like Permatex Ultra Grey) around the half-moon caps etc to help seal the tricky bits, or if you want you can run a bead all the way around (not really needed).

Hiro: When I said the "mechanic can use the gasket that comes with it or the FIPG (form-in-place gasket)." I was talking about the WATER PUMP. Napa says as far as he can tell the water pump comes with a gasket, which he would use if he was doing the water pump. The toyota parts guy asked a tech and the tech said to use FIPG on the water pump and the 2 or 3 piece timing cover (instead of a gasket). I have a genuine toyota valve cover gasket for the corolla. Napa says he just needs to know when they get it apart if the water pump is a 7 hole mount or 8 hole mount. The independent mechanic will order the correct water pump from napa and the timing belt tensioner. All of these are in stock at Napa.

What do you think guys? I could really use your help! Is there something missing from my list? I heard one guy talk about a 3rd oil seal- but not taking oil pump apart.
Another guy said something about getting an o-ring for the engine oil tube dipstick or trans dipstick? Please help! I need advice.

I don't know why you'd be replacing the crankshaft pulley unless it is damaged.

Here is a list of the OEM numbers to do a T/Belt and Valve cover gasket:

13568-19135 - T/belt
16100-19205-84 - Water Pump
13505-15041 - tensioner
90311-35040 - cam seal
90311-32020 - oil pump seal/crank seal
96761-24035 - water pump o ring
90916-03046 - T/stat optional but worth while
16325-63010 - T/stat gskt optional but worth while
11213-15050 - V/C gskt
111935-15010 - Tube Sealt
11183-15020 - half moon
00295-00103 - FIPG

Ahh, got a little confused because you had the cam cover gasket and the FIPG next to each other in the list, makes more sense now.

Thanks for all your replies, especially toyotapartsman. Toyotaparts man asks why I would be replacing the crankshaft pulley unless it was damaged.
I thought I had read here, that NOT the harmonic balancer, part #12 on page 2A-12, but part #7 which is called a crankshaft sprocket (this is the toothed small gear at the bottom behind the timing cover which drives the timing belt ) was very easy to break! I'm on cancer meds-may have misunderstood. Parts guy at toyota place asked tech and tech said to soak it overnight with pb blaster, but shop probably doesn't have time. I thought I had read no tapped holes for a puller that's why it breaks. Or can it stay where it is and not mess with it while replacing new timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc?

1)What sprocket cracks in half when you try to walk it off with 2 screwdrivers? Perhaps a different engine then the DOHC 4A-FE?

2)I ended up going to napa in person yesterday. I got the timing belt tensioner as napa calls it, Haynes (#3) on page 2A-12 calls it an idler pulley. No wonder people get confused!

3)I looked at the 2 different water pumps napa catalog says might be in there. Even had vin and told the guy 1990 toy. corolla 1.6L 4 cyl.-DOHC, engine family 4A-FE. There is a 7 hole mount that comes with a gasket, ($41.49) part # 57-1214 water pump. The 8 hole mount water pump ($28.49) part # 57-1287 also comes with a gasket. The backs of both water pumps show NO o-rings. Napa shows no o-rings for it. They are both remanufactured Aisin water pumps which I thought someone had said was OEM.

Anybody got any opinions on where this o-rings might fit into? Perhaps the plate behind the water pump?

Bit of a thread-jack... does brand matter when it comes to replacing the timing belt components? I'd rather go OEM, but saw this on Advance Auto's site for $54:

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...1166696821____

The tensioner (idler pulley) alone is $83 from Toyota.
