First of, what engine are we talking here?
And what did you want to know? just changing the complete starter for a new one? That isn't difficult. 2 Bolts and some wiring to be undone and you already have the thing in you hands

Or do you want to overhaul the starter? If so, take a look at this page:

Question HOW TO: starter motor assembly NEED MORE INFO.

Sorry for my shortcoming in not providing the engine type, it's a 4 cyl. 16 valve single cam 96.8 cu in displacement, it's a 4AF engine carburetored California emission.
The engine is IN the vehicle..and what I need to know is whether the starter motor assembly can be removed without pulling the engine----and if so, what other parts will have to be removed to gain access to the starter for removal.
Thanks again for the links that you sent...

If I am not mistaken, the starter on the 4A-F engine is on the intake side of the block. So that does make it a bit difficult to reach.
But if you really want some good room to work, remove the complete intake and should be able to get to it and work on it comfortably.

If you have the means to do so, get the car in the air and you will be able to get to it from underneeth without the need to remove anything.

Good luck!

THANK YOU just doesn't seem to be sufficient....but thank you ;-)) I'm going to try going underneath......vehicle was in such bad shape that I'm shocked I got this far with it.....I thought the nightmare was over when I redid the circuit board, in which folks (not on this site) told me was impossible!! Got it running about 3 hours ago after replacing the high voltage coil........so now will go under and get at the starter....thanks again! Will you be available in case I have (hopefully not) any other problems?
