What's this part called... it had a houndstooth kinda pattern cover over it, but mine frayed off. Between the cat converter and where it goes underneath the hood. I've got a crack in mine and I noticed that my car is having a harder time starting and a very prevalent rattling noise when accelerating from a stop. Especially when just starting the car. Seems to disappear when driving, but it's getting worse.
How can I patch it up really inexpensively? I only need my Corolla for 2 more months and now this came up.

you are having a problem with and we could tell you easily. but it sounds like it might be your exhaust manifold that has a crack in it, im not sure can anybody second that?

Well the problem is that I notice its been harder and harder to start. It seems to be correlating with the pipe because I noticed it wasn't that bad and making some noise but the car would still start (the pipe was rusty, but no visible cracks or holes), now the rattling is much worse and the car barely "makes it" starting up (now I can see a decent crack in that pipe). I have to give it some gas before putting it into gear. I notice the car pulsing on idle worse, too.
I just had the timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, oil change, wireset and distributor cap, new transmission fluid, and belts changed/put in. It's not an electrical problem because it does turn over and all electrical components work, battery/alternator are fine. Not throwing any codes either, I had a MAP sensor issue a long time ago and swapped it out with success. So I can't think of what else it could be and since it's happening as this pipe is getting worse, it seems likely.
That flex pipe hole shouldn't be causing any hard start issues. How did it start before you had the timing belt etc. replaced? If the hard starting began after that take it back to them. They might have installed the timing belt off a notch and it is out of time or an electrical connector or vac hose in the area they were doing the work was never reconnected.

It was pretty much the same. Any other ideas? I just notice that it got worse today and that's when the sound from the pipe got a lot worse too. It feels like there's not enough fuel getting to the car for some reason. It's fine after about 5 minutes driving it around and there's no rattling noise after that either. I notice some starting problems after I drive around and then starting it up after 20 minutes or so. If it's like 5 minutes between starts, not bad. It's just starting it up after all night then medium length trips like that.
There is a cold start injector which richens the mixture to aid cold start. Can see it on fuel rail as a separate line going to intake manifold. Possible fuel pressure regulator failure. It's located at end of fuel rail with a vac line. Maybe the fuel pump is getting weak. Before starting did you ever try turning key to on position for a minute before cranking to allow fuel line to pressurize?

Tried again with leaving it in the "on" position before starting for a minute. It stalled out on the first start then started up on the 2nd -- that's about where it was a couple weeks ago.
I checked for any diagnostic codes again and I got nothing. The manifold was cleaned out about 4 months or so ago and it didn't change anything, too.
So I thought I knew where this thing was, it's smack dab on the intake manifold with a black/green plug out of it, right? I tried to take it off and it started spraying gas, anyway to avoid that happening again?

Pulling your gas tank cap can help relieve some of the pressure, but won't stop it completely.
Wrap an old rag around it to catch the fuel, but you will still get some on the ground.
