Cv boot replacement help needed

Hi
I'm new to this forum. Trying to replace the passenger side CV boot on a 1991 Corrolla station wagon manual trans. When we pulled the half shaft out of the trans a thick white oily sludge flowed out. Is this normal. When putting it back together what do I need to do as far as lubrication goes where the half shaft connects to the trans.

This is not a good sign and most likely means you have water in your transmission that has mixed with the oil. Definetly drain your tranny an put some fresh oil in there.

You want to drain and refill again a couple of times to try and get as much of that water out of the transmission. I would say probably about 3 times at least (depending on what the oil looks like at each draining) at about 20 - 50 mile intervals as convenience allows.

When you fill the tranny, the differential compartment (where the axle goes in) will get oil.

I've seen very old gear lube look like it's got water in it too. At any rate your still going to want to probably drain and fill it a couple of times at least.

Thanks for your replies. I went and saw my local mechanic and he said it was nothinng to worry about. Its just years of the grease being mixed around a bit of moisture and getting hot and cold all the time. Just clean it up put some new grease on. It has nothing to do with the state of the tranny fluid as they are independant from the grease in the half shaft drive.

Ok I think we all got confused when you said you removed the half shaft and the stuff came out. So it sounds like you disassembled the half shaft transmission tulip while leaving the tulip in the transmission.

That's just my guess, that the CV shaft was just pulled on and it probably separated.
