I was just wondering, I have a '87 Celica GT 2.2 w/ a 5spd trans that I would like to swap into my '89 Corolla, have any of you done this or herd of it, some issues I see w/ doing the swap is the Celica is fuel injected so it has a PCM and the Corolla is carbureted, obviously I will have to make mounts and things of that nature but thats not a issue in my eyes, feedback would be appreciated...

Is the 2.2L in the Celica a 5SFE? If so, do a search for all the threads concerning 3SGTE swaps -- it'll all be the same except you don't need to worry about the turbo.
Honestly, with all the work involved, I'd just go straight to a 3SGTE.

The thing is I own both the '87 Celica and the '89 Corolla, the Corolla I am debating on junking but the body is near mint and the Celica is ROUGH, I bought the Celica from a buddy of mine at work while I was waiting for the title for my Jeep, neither the Celica or Corolla are on the road and I don't NEED either of them but it seems like a waste to get rid of either. It would be nice to take the two and make a pretty decent car out of them.
i don't remember the celica comming with a 5sfe in that year. i remember it came in a 2.0 fe or 3sge in the gts. alot of people flame the 5sfe, however aw11 guys that have done the swap says it feels much like a 4agze without the hassle of the supercharger.

I don't recall the 5SFE in that year either but he said 2.2L so that was my guess.
And the AW11 guys who have done the swap also wish they'd done a 3SGTE in the first place. The 5SFE is a fine, reliable motor... but not very suited for any sort of performance application. The 3SGTE, on the other hand, is a spectacular performer from the factory and responds well to simple mods.
i totally agree, having owned a 3sgte before. actually owning a 5sfe with bolt ons, 3rd gen 3sge and then 3sgte. although it may be better to do it right the 1st time, if you can "fit" a 5sfe in then you are already ready for the 3sgte mounting wise when you save up enough. i was actually considering running a 5sfe in my ae92, since i have a full doner 92' celica. eventually wanting to put in a 3sgte. however with the way things are working out in my life i decided to just stay with my smallport and just drive the car as is, tuning my car can't be my 1st priority anymore.
best dyno of a mildly tuned 5sfe. these are 220 degree cams!!!

if your 89 is not an alltrac nor a gts, you'll also have to "convert" to EFI.... which means either a spendy external pump & new lines or find an ae92 efi tank, lines, and pump

like rdyzz and ghostyman have said, Toyota did not use a 5SFE stock in 87. Actually as far as I know It wasn't used in any vehicles until '90. Also the information on a 3S swap should get you pretty close to what you need to know.
Well I know Donald was rather happy with his 7AFE swap so the 5SFE would be somewhat similar in the outcome, its not a high revving engine, but for getting around the torque is pretty good and I'd imagine even more so for the lighter corolla. That being said though, I dont know if the 5S would be worth while. It would be an improvement but its a lot of work to get there.
